The Military has a long history of supporting elite athletes.

It is a valuable recruiting tool and helps build unit pride.

IOW, useless...

The Army begs to differ. They, along with the other services, have had such programs since..well at least the years between the world wars, but likely longer than that.

She's only unusual, becasue she is a she.

She is a Captain, and that means she served at least 3 years, and probably somewhat more, before applying for and being accepted into the program.
