Gulf spill starts seeping into political campaigns

As oil continues to pour into the Gulf of Mexico with no real end in sight, the spill is becoming an issue in the 2010 campaign.

On Wednesday, the League of Conservation Voters launched a TV ad using footage of the April 20 explosion on BP's Deepwater Horizon to attack Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln's ties to BP and the overall oil industry. "Big Oil has another gusher," the ad says, as a cartoon image of the U.S. Capitol dome explodes in a spout of dollar bills. "But this time it's tens of millions in campaign cash."

The ad slams Lincoln, a Democrat facing a tough primary runoff next week, for supporting policies to expand offshore drilling. Near the end of the ad, a photo of Lincoln fades into footage of flames shooting from the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf. "It's time to send Big Oil a message," the ad intones. "Send Blanche Lincoln packing."

Unmentioned in the ad is that both Lincoln and her Democratic challenger, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, support offshore drilling — though both have called for a moratorium after the BP disaster.
