LONDON - British police said the death toll from a shooting spree in northwest England earlier on Wednesday had risen to 12.
A taxi driver described as quiet but friendly went on a shooting spree across a picturesque rural area before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said.

No no no...the point you are ascribing to me is that which is held by nmh. My point is that music is very powerful, it can inspire love, hate, jealousy, anger, sadness or any other emotion. It just depends on what the composer is intending (if anything, and of course whether they succeed). I dont have anything against George Harrison. The only thing I could say about his skill as a composer is that he is not as gifted as Lennon/McCartney and that his song “My Sweet Lord” certainly has an agenda.
I know, it was an apparently failed attempt at facetiousness.
It was a shotgun. But that didn't stop NBC's Brian Williams from saying "randomly spraying bullets" on the news last night.
Apparently two weapons have been recovered, a shotgun and some kind of sniper rifle. Certainly something with a very big telescopic sight anyway.
Cumbria Shootings ‘Prove Gun Laws Need A Shake-Up’

Ahem. You were saying?
Looks like that fabulous gun ban worked out pretty good...
For the shooter...
You get your act together before trying to take the piss.
In the last year for which information is available 2008/9, the number of deaths in England and Wales due to firearms was 38 - thirty eight. The figure for deaths in USA with a population roughly about 6 times is tens of Thousands.

In your quote, one person has called for the law to be tightened. And as I wrote, "there will be pressure from some quarters to do that".
However, as I also stated, the government atm has no plans to change the law, and the indications are that they won't.

And this means what, exactly???
Maybe I should have added a “/sarcasm” tag to my comment, but I figured my previous statement was rather obvious...And not directed at anyone on this website in particular...
It’s directed to you as you were the last poster in a long line of posters ‘taking the piss’ about what had happened in the UK - the phrase means “to mock” - look the phrase up on the internet and you’ll see that it is british slang.
The point is that, apart from rare occassions such as what happened in Cumbria, our gun laws are good laws. If you follow the link I provided, then you will see that in 2008/9 there were 38 homicides due to firearm offences in England & Wales. A remarkably low number compared with the figure in the USA. So if you doubt the efficacy of British legislation then you provide an alternative and if possible a persuasive explanation for the disparity per head of population.
BTW I’m not advocating gun control in the USA, the sitation on the ground is completly different from the UK - what works for us will not work for you. It looks like you will just have to live (or for thousands of Americans per year, die)with it.
