There are lots and lots of unexploded bombs from WWII in Germany. Last week, near our house in Berlin, they dug up a 1000 pounder. Lots of folks got to move out for the night and it was defused and back they went.
It will be interesting to find out if someone made a mistake in this instance or if the cookie finally cooked off on this bomb.

It has been estimated by the Strategic Bombing Survey of 1947 that 60% of Allied Bombs did not hit their target and of those it will be unknown how many were buried and did not go off(duds). I would not ever be in heavy construction or farming in Germany, France or Belgium.

Negligence? Good grief. Its a bomb squad.

Did I hear that there were some German citizens on the flotilla boat that caused all the uproar?
Isn’t life interesting these days.

The U.S. dropped bombs with randomly set time delay fuses (though none as long as fifty years) to discourage fire fighting, salvage and defusing efforts. A dud might be a dud or it might be a ticking time bomb.
Obviously that old ordinance can be quite touchy. Those sappers have my admiration. Sad, indeed.

Will these deaths be officially considered casualties of WWII in the eyes of historians?

My brother-in-law was a Civil Engineer working for a county in Germany. He ran into an unexpolded bomb while checking on a water project in a North German city.

It was not immediately clear why the bomb, reportedly weighing 500kg (1,100lb), had detonated. 1) An unusually long fuse...
2) A whack on the nose with a spanner...

Funeral Director to women in black: I’m sorry Ma’am how did your son die so young?” Women: “He died from the allied bombings of WWII.” Funeral director: “I must admit I am not up on advances in science, I was unaware time travel was possible.”
