Paddy Ashdown, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats and international overseer of Bosnia, is in the frame to become a European special envoy for the Balkans, according to senior sources in Brussels.

Catherine Ashton, the Labour peer who is the EU's foreign and security policy chief, is to discuss Ashdown's possible appointment at dinner in London on Thursday night with William Hague, the foreign secretary.

Dear Editor,

What a choice word: “Overseer” of Bosnia. That’s indeed what Paddy Ashdown was/is, like those slave owners’ evil “Overseers” from Civil War times in America (1861-1865-See UNCLE TOM’S CABIN by Harriet Beecher Stowe). Putting Paddy Ashdown back in Bosnia would be like having a Simon Legree and his bloodhound dogs of entitlement of history run loose in a swamp of injustice. If its peace you’re seeking, there have to be other choices.

Let’s see. Slovenia could break away from Yugoslavia, Croatia could secede from Yugoslavia, but the Serbs from the Krajina (Croatia) could not elect to stay with Yugoslavia. Bosnian Muslims could break away from Yugoslavia, but the Bosnian Serbs, who owned by titled deed 2/3 of the land in Bosnia, could not elect to stay with Yugoslavia. Macedonia could break away and be recognized as a separate country, as could Montenegro, all with the backing on forces other than those who had the best interests of Yugoslavia at heart. Granting Albanians in Kosovo the right to take 15% of Serbian land/sacred history for their own country is unbelievable, but definitely in keeping with “Might makes Right!” philosophy. So, Paddy Ashdown and Bosnian Plantation Slavery for Serbs?
