DREAD IN THE MED: ISRAEL CONCERNED TURK NAVY WITH NEXT FLOTILLA
Drudge Report ^

Posted on 06/02/2010 5:51:09 AM PDT by jhpigott

Headline only - linked to a story from the Jerusalem Post with the following quote:

"This comment, officials said, could signify a change in Turkish military posture in the event that another flotilla is dispatched to the Gaza Strip. The official said that the chances that Turkey would send navy ships were slim – due to its membership in NATO – but that the issue was of great concern.

“This is a definte possibility that we need to prepare for,” a senior defense official said."

Providing armed military escorts for blockade runners is an Act of War...

Dear Israel,

I would say to draw a “line” in the water (coordinatres, lat/long) and ANY vessel that crosses it will be sunk.

No exceptions. No matter who’s aboard.

It’s life or death.

They cannot be permitted to replenish their rockets and fire on your people. Yours or theirs. That’s the choice.

BUT....theirs have fair warning NOT to cross the line.

Isn't Turkey broke?

My bet is on Israel.

I disagree. Turkey’s government is aligned with Iran and they’re both spoiling for war, along with Syria and Hezzbollah. They think they’ve got Irael surrounded. Unless the General’s move against the islamists running Turkey I think this is a distinct possibility.

While I would put the Israeli naval forces up against the Turks anytime (hey, those Israeli subs don’t just carry nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, they’ve also got TORPEDOES, ya hear that ya Turkish clapperheads?), there IS however a risk I’ve not heard addressed yet:

IF there were a confrontation between Israeli and Turkish naval forces, and if such a confrontation resulted in Turkish casualities or even the loss of a Turkish naval vessel, would that constitute a provocation/justification to bring all other NATO members into the conflict (as Turkey IS a member of NATO, and Israel is NOT)?

I could EASILY see that Kenyan scumbag in the White House signing on to such a response/retaliation against Israel, hiding behind the NATO charter for political cover.

Bibi?

Be careful friend.

No way, no how does Turkey try something that foolish. It would likely spark a regional war. It is somewhat disconcerting that there are elements within the IDF that seem to think it is a possibility.

It doesn’t look like the Israeli Foreign Ministry is taking any chances either. From the Haaretz ticker - 08:35
Foreign Ministry orders families of diplomats in Turkey to return to Israel (AP)

Now is a time for a JFK moment in Israel.

We know the Turks like genocide, Israel may well find themselves completely surrounded. Iran threatening to nuke them and now the Turks sending their Navy ships to confront the Israeli Navy

“The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness ever and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Luckily, thanks to the bravery of two men, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, war was averted.”

The Israelis have Laser-guided naval shells. Pinpoint accuracy over-the-horizon with aircraft based Laser designators. If the Turks mess with the Israeli Navy, they are in for a world of hurt.

The Turks are going to send their surface ships into a region where Israel has air supremacy? Good luck with that.

So let’s assume that Turkey does send its navy to “protect” this flotilla.

It seems to me that if Israel were to fire on one of the Turkish Navy vessels, or even sink one, it would place the US in a very strange spot as a member of NATO, and a patron of Israel.

It would not be hard for NATO to gently explain to Turkey that sending their navy to run a blockade after being warned would not be a legitimate use of force for defensive purposes.

” US in a very strange spot as a member of NATO “

As far as I know, there’s nothing in the NATO Charter that requires Member Nations to aid another Member in committing an act of aggression...

That should be all the fig-leaf that NATO (whose members have, for the most part, demonstrated a marked aversion to actually engaging in battle) would need to stand on the sidelines and jeer....

In a stand up fight between the Israeli navy and the Turkish navy (presuming neutral waters and neither side having air superiority) - I may take the Turkish navy

Their 8 updated Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates are the real deal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Hazard_Perry_class_frigate

That being said, Israel would wipe them off the map without Turkish air cover.

"The Turks are going to send their surface ships into a region where Israel has air supremacy? Good luck with that."

Exactly. if it was in the middle of the Pacific the Turkish and Israeli naval forces would be a good match for each other(my bet is still on the Israelis), but being under the air cover of a couple of hundred F-15s and F-16s would turn this into a suicide mission!

You talk as though Turks and other Muslim countries are rational while history has shown they are not. Israel cannot allow itself to be cowed by the Turkish navy or anyone else.
