The son of former Nightline anchor Ted Koppel has been found dead in a New York City apartment, police said.
Andrew Koppel, 40, was declared dead around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after police responded to a 911 call, Det. Joseph Cavitolo told TVGuide.com. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death, he said.
Koppel, who worked for the city's Housing Attorney, had been drinking all day Monday in a Hell's Kitchen bar, where he befriended a stranger, Russell Wimberly, the New York Post reported.
The two drank all day Koppel drank straight whiskey and did not eat anything, Wimberly, 32, told the Post, before they arrived at the Washington Heights apartment owned by Wimberly's friend, Belinda Caban, 53, around 11 p.m.
Wimberly said he and Caban put Koppel to bed and called 911 a few hours later when he appeared to be not breathing.

Hopefully not Sandy Hume redux.
Maybe his father should have taken the time to drag him to see Bill W (aka AA). Sad.
that’s so sad. I always thought Ted was the most professional of any of the network anchors.
Being “drug” anywhere usually does not work for alcoholics.
Prayers for Ted Koppel and his family. So many lives lost to alcohol or drugs. How tragic.
We never see the true story and as so often, the sons and daughters of the parents, the MSM put on the pedestal, often end up in the dumper. The story...drinking the hard stuff all day with a pick up stranger simply doesn’t pass the smell test...sad.
Prayers for Mr. Koppel and his family. Losing a child, no matter who you are, is the ultimate pain.
My prayers to the Koppe1 family on their loss. I hope the family can grieve in relative privacy, no one deserves to have prying eyes on them at a moment like this. How tragic.
It can, though - it worked for one of my relatives, who got sentenced to alternate nights of AA and NA. The judge also found the relative in question a job which started at 5 am. It was a year or so before it "took", but the R-I-Q has been sober about thirty years now. Sorry about the odd pronoun construction - I'm preserving anonymity.
sad. Another death due to alcoholism. Prayers for the family. I am sure something such as this has been feared by them for sometime.
Most likely this has happened and possibly several times. As you know unless the alcoholic is willing to get sober there is little anyone can do except not support them drinking and not make it easy for them to do so.
excellent story. I am sure your relative is a great role model for other newbies trying to get sober.
Guys? Should you ever have occasion to put a passed out drunk in bed, PUT THEM ON THEIR SIDE!!!
A drunk passed out on their back is apt to puke and drown in their own vomit, on their side they just ruin the pillow.
The alcohol intake can be so severe it causes respiratory depression and ultimate failure. The passed out person simply stops breathing and dies.
That happened here in Virginia a few years ago - an adult woman, her adult friend, and her fifteen-year-old sister stopped at the liquor store where the adult made a perfectly legal purchase of Bacardi 151 which she had no intention of sharing with the teen. At another stop, the teen stayed in the car while the adults went inside, taking advantage of the opportunity to open and drink a large quantity of the booze. By the time adult-and-sister returned to their parents' house, it was obvious that the kid was drunk, but big sis, not wanting kid sis to get in trouble, snuck her in and put her to bed. It never occurred to her that her sister would never wake up...dreadful tragedy.
Another alcohol (and I guarantee there were drugs involved) death. Very sad.
