In an editorial posted on its website Sunday night, Sarah's Palin's hometown newspaper in Wasilla, Alaska, warned author and journalist Joe McGinniss (who has moved next door to Palin as he conducts research for a book on the former governor) about a state law that allows the use of deadly force to defend one's property.
The editorial, titled "Wasilla fence fascinating for national media outlets," paints a disparaging portrait both of McGinniss' work and the national media's coverage of his controversial decision to take up temporary residence so close to Palin.
Its concluding sentence reads, "Finally, those who are fond of Joe McGinnis [sic] might remind him (if he doesn't already know) that Alaska has a law that allows the use of deadly force in protection of life and property."
Managing editor Tom Mitchell, who wrote the editorial, said that it was vetted by the Frontiersman's publisher, Kari Sleight, and a reporter at the newspaper.
"I didn't see it as being controversial. It's just a statement of fact," Mitchell told CBS News.

On Saturday, McGinniss told his side of the story to the Washington Post, emphasizing that he respected Palin's privacy and was not interested in spying on her children, as Palin had suggested he was.
Look, this is a pain in the ass for them," he told the Post. "I understand that. If I were her, I'd be upset. I'd be annoyed. But I'd be an adult about it, and I would figure out, okay, how can we resolve this in a way that's not going to make this into something that everybody gets obsessive about?
"By being here, I have learned things, and I've gotten an insight into her character, into her ability to incite hatred, that before I only knew about in the abstract."(continued)

That may be, but you sure sounded like you agreed with being obliged to sell something to someone to whom you don’t want to sell. That’s why you lost me in that post.
And, I disagree with your scenario. Maybe that’s how it works in some places, but I bet not AK. If I am selling a property, and there’s a reason I don’t like the buyer, the only obligation I see is to not sell, and let the contractor go to hell if he doesn’t like it.
Where I grew up - if neighbor does something you don’t like, you don’t immediately rush to press charges.

Where I grew up, if a neighbor A commits a crime against neighbor B (like, say, peering into neighbor B’s house with binoculars) AND neighbor B is afraid for the safety of her children as a result of neighbor A’s criminal activities, then the FIRST thing neighbor B does is call the police and press charges against neighbor A!

Thanks! I was there several years before Kari took the reins. However, I can tell you this much about the author, Joe McGinnis: his previous book on Alaska, “Going to Extremes,” was one of the worst I’ve ever read communicating what it really means to live here. I imagine that his book on Palin will be equally awful.
Best book ever written about the state, in terms of accurately describing what it means to live here: “Coming into the Country” by John McPhee. Even the books by Sidney Huntington and his son only look at a certain slice of life up here. McPhee mirrored what I see around me.

I don't feel miserable. I think Sarah Palin is doing a pretty good job of feeding off the liberals' misery, so to me this is nothing but a show for which I pop corn.

I stand corrected. I checked with Alaskan law. It took several seconds of my time. Yes, provided that you’re not in violation of the fair housing act (which is federal), you could turn a prospective buyer down even if the buyer met your asking price. But wait, there’s a catch: Since your price was met, you’re legally on the hook for the commissions of everyone involved just as though the sale went through. You can’t back out of the conditions of the listing contract once an offer that meets the asking price en toto is on the table.
You grew up in a strange place if people didn’t call the cops when someone used binoculars to peer in through windows. Which you still haven’t provided a citation for btw. I’m starting to doubt that there were any binoculars outside of your imagination.
