Info Update added:
Five cars on an Amtrak train derailed Sunday night near Granite City.
Authorities said there are injuries. The train cars derailed near Niedringhaus Ave and Benton.
News 4 will be following this story as it develops.
...
No details yet other than there are injuries and I belive 5 or 6 cars derailed.
Oh boy. Here come the vastly ignorant comments.
Was Tar Ball President close by?
It is the curse of the Obama administration, every time he goes somewhere something bad happens.
voodoo
You know, you’d think no plane crashes ever happened, and no cars ever piled up on the freeway the way you people talk.
I find people are vastly ignorant about trains and how they operate - partly because they have indeed become rare in America, they’ve never experienced them, period.
Well Obama’s on vacation, so no news is allowed.
Can’t find anything else about it...
Good trains are the best of all worlds.
I’ve heard threats of “security” but am not aware of it being implemented yet, so the BS of airport security is I think still non-existent.
Unlike planes and buses, there is MUCH area in which to spread out, and walk about as you like. You simply cannot move from your seat in those other public vehicles. Also, there is MUCH more space in train seating than even the plane. There is also food served up - and with a dining car you’ll get something nice indeed.
Unlike cars, you don’t have to get exhausted driving yourself, you can do what you want while moving, and you don’t AS A RULE get caught in ANY jams (especially try that in a strange area - lots of luck finding a “shortcut” out of it). It’s comfortable and you get there about the time they schedule.
make that PASSENGER trains have had their place......
I have been a train freak since I was 5 years old. One of these days I am going to take an Amtrack out west just for the experience. I do not approve of dumping billions down a rat hole providing high speed rail service when there is no proof there is a market for it. It may make sense between a few large population centers in close proximity, but not a good idea as a 1930’s style jobs program.
If only we would the govrnment would have control Amtrak then no accidents would happen...
Amtrak does not own the track on this route.
So this disrailment was probably caused by negligent lack of track maintenance by whatever freight RR who owns the track.
We need to build an independent, dedicated high-speed track for Amtrak so people aren't injured by the crappy freight tracks.
Exactly..
Again you prove to be a Faux Conservative when you want the Government to do everything.. Remember Reagan said to fear these words: I’m from the Government and I’m hear to help you.. Sorry Willie I should not have to pay for you train hobby..
Oh by the way name me the last freight rail derailment..
This past Tuesday in Greensboro, NC.

Still no excuse for spending trillions of my money for a separate line..
I agree. I don’t like “public” transportation in the governmental sense. Of course, I’m a purist and don’t think pretty much ANYthing should be “public”.
I just don’t like the condescending and snide pontificating about how horrible trains are by people who really have no knowledge of them at all.
What was your point with such question? That it’s not the freight line’s fault? (Never mind that freights don’t derail...)
High-speed passenger trains are more likely to have trouble on low-speed purpose rails (i.e., meant for freight traffic and not maintained to better standards).
There is no need to spend trillions of dollars to spend on high speed choo choo’s when no one is going to ride..
I love taking the train the few times I did. You arrive at your destination stress free...very comfortable seating..and once I had a private cabin but barely used it as everyone was in the lounge telling stories the entire night...went from Lorton Vir. to Orlando Fl. auto-train. Great trip in every way.
I disagree. An efficient and well planned high speed train system well get good ridership BUT only if done by private industry and not the government.
I second everything you’ve said. If you can afford the time, rail travel has so much going for it. Even for business travelers, your cell phone and wireless internet signals are almost always available. If only it was profitable enough that we could keep government from running it directly. (sigh)
