This is a link to the original Japanese story just now.
Rather sketchy and breaking, but will synopsize main points into English as thus:
There is the large Kaesong Industrial Complex in North Korea for manufacturing products, which is just across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) from the truce village of Panmunjom, jointly run by North and South Korea. You can clearly see this development from overlook vantage points on hills located around Panmunjom. There are a number of South Korean managers and employers there on-site as we speak. At this time, they are apparantly not free to leave.
N. Korea is threatening to cut the surface roads into this complex and close the border crossing. For all intents and purposes they could prevent the South Koreans from leaving and thus creating a hostage/human shield situation right on the DMZ just 60 minutes north of Seoul.
Conservative, Japanese Sankei News via Japanese Kyodo Wire via Yonhap (South Korean) news is revealing the following facts tonight (Read below), along with pictures and overview maps I supply.

It will escalate to rather large exchange of fire. I don't think they can come in and get out with only some N. Korean guards killed.
This is a strong message to N. Korea that next time their action would unleash punishing blows. On the other hand, it is not a good idea to advertise their rescue mission. It drastically reduce the chance of success.
Given how difficult it would be to prevent a rapid escalation along the whole 38th parallel in the event of a US/SK rescue operation, do either of you think we would first send in the likes of Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton to negotiate before resorting to this type of operation? Or is this plan locked, cocked and ready to fire at the first sign Kim starts blocking that road from Kaesong to the SK border?
I’m all for sending Carter, Both Clintons and Maddie albright over there before any rescue attempt...
Hard to tell. Military would want to go for the second scenario, but politicians would balk at it. So I think they would go for the first one. Send in negotiators or carry out negotiations at Panmunjom. I doubt that it would be Jimmy Carter. Clinton is of course a possibility.

As a New Mexican, I’d be willing to toss Bill Richardson into the mix, too...
Neer neer neer = they went looking for cheap labor - screw'em: no US personnel should have anything to do with any recovery operations.
Let the Koreans protect Hyundai's Profits.
Holy crap, that has the potential to be a very explosive situation. Thanks again for your reports, you beat the hell out of anything else out there.
I think so too...can’t hardly go a day without checking FR....especially when candidates are running or international happenings.....people here are on it!
That's a lot of ugly on one 747. But I've got a few to add to the list.

Those forces are backed up by over 600,000 US troops slated to reinforce Korea in case a NK invasion.

But with Obama who knows.
I doubt we have the capability to get the troops and their equipment there in a reasonable time. We’d end up taking troops out of Afghanistan.

Sean Penn and Babs Streisand, for example...
Consider this scenario - we offer a whole planeload of high-visibility Liberals in direct exchange for the workerbee hostages — then, when they give us their demands for the release of Carter/Clintons/Richardson/et. al, we just point and laugh....
