West Memphis police officer Bill Evans was found lying face down in a ditch after being shot multiple times by a 16-year-old, including a shot in the back, the city's police chief said Tuesday.
The chief said his son, a sergeant over the criminal interdiction unit, took cover Thursday behind his vehicle as teenager Joseph Kane opened fire with an AK-47. He said bullets pierced the engine and the car and shattered glass. Brandon was riddled with bullets before being shot in the back of the head, Paudert said.

Paudert told them that as of Tuesday, he wanted officers carrying shotguns on traffic stops. He wanted one officer to approach while a second officer stood back with a shotgun ready to fire if the situation turns dangerous.

My bigger concerns are them howling about this being a prime example for the need to reinstate the assault weapons ban.
They need a carbine at least.

Whatis up lately with all the news stories (on tv too up here) with LEOs being attacked and vice versa.
Is there a lil uncivil war going on between Law enforcement and the underbelly of society?
Or is it just the fad to cover such stories?
It seems like we have had a few a month need to use deadly force cases up here in the PNW and otoh the LEOs are targets then there is the bad element of LEO being highlighted by local news.
I almost think having cameras everywhere is bringing all this and other crime/perps to the daily news.
Since they always have footage of the crime or get away.
Maybe these crimes have been the same in occurance all along just now have Pics or video to go along with so they make it onto the daily tv news.
The headline seems to indicate that the officers couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with their pistols, but a 16 y/o kid was a much better shot with an AK. ...???
Spray and pray doesn’t seem like a good policy.
The only positive thing about this story is that the Kanes are dead and burning in hell forever.
Shooting back probably would have worked out better for him.

The son was one of the two unarmed (and later wounded) officers that arrived first at the Walmart and were walking toward the van to identify it when the Kanes opened fire. If not for another unarmed wildlife officer ramming the van with his vehicle, they would likely have died also.
No, Chief Paudert’s son was killed at the initial traffic stop near I-40. The suspects fled from that scene to the Wal-Mart after stopping at an apartment complex where they removed their license plates.

I suppose my haste to comment comes from seeing so many jump to conclusions that the police were automatically wrong.
No problem. I saw a lot of that too on a thread that was pulled a little while ago. Jerry and Joe Kane were lunatics. They were looking for a shootout with the cops and they got one.
You’re not thinking rationally. Two cops are dead, and they didn’t riddle themselves with bullets. Maybe the cops were corrupt, thug cops, or maybe they were just bullies (big maybes, since the vast majority of cops are competent pros) but the escalation to opening fire with an auto AK goes way beyond the childish and tired “jack-booted cops” narrative.
I think the kid was a complete fruitcake.
