Colonel Ri Sun-kwon from N. Korea's Defense Commission claims N. Korea's innocence in Cheonan incident at a news conference in Pyongyang on May 28. This is the first time Defense Commission held news conference to foreigners.(Kyodo/Yonhap)
Is NK going to start backing down slowly?
Cuz it sure don’t look like, with its naval exercises, that the SK is going to bac down.
Tense standoff would probably continue for several months, on and off.
Ping!
“Cuz it sure dont look like, with its naval exercises, that the SK is going to bac down.”
SK is not going to put hundreds of thousands of people in Seoul at risk by taking aggressive action. The north has a complete checkmate on the south. The Chinese won’t do anything. The SK won’t do anything. And it hasn’t been clear to me for many years why we have 30,000 US hostages near the DMZ.
NK would eventually be destroyed if hostilities started. But the cost in SK and US lives would be very, very high. The status quo will continue for a long time.
lol.
It's a tripwire. It guarantees that the North cannot begin hostilities without engaging directly with U.S. troops. For any administration prior to the current one it guaranteed that the U.S. would respond with more than talk. The same technique was used in Western Europe and in both cases it has worked just fine.
The expression on that guy’s face prompted that thought in my head. He really does have an expression of surprise.
From Aug 5, 2001:
Putin, Kim Jong Il Signed Declaration
Russian President Vladimir Putin and visiting top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Jong Il, held a historic meeting in the Kremlin on last Saturday to warm traditional ties between their two countries, which have stagnated for over a decade, and signed a key declaration to guide the development of bilateral relations.
At the meeting, Putin expressed his satisfaction with the fact that Kim "has finally made it to Moscow after such a lengthy trip" by train along the Trans-Siberian Railway, the same route Kims late father once traveled.
After their meeting, the two leaders signed a milestone declaration which focused on strategic stability and the guidelines of expanding bilateral friendship and cooperation.
The two sides agreed to "promote and enhance friendly relations" in line with the joint declaration of July 19, 2000 and the Russia-DPRK friendship and good neighborly cooperation treaty of February 9, 2000.
Putin and Kim agreed during their talks to promote a Russian- DPRK political dialogue on the Korean issue and international affairs, and discussed many topical international problems, deputy head of the Russian presidential administration Sergei Prikhodko told reporters following the talks.
The two leaders spoke for an independent and peaceful solution to the issue of reunification of the Korean Peninsula, and against "any outside obstacles to this process" as "unacceptable."
The DPRK stated that withdrawal of the American troops from South Korea is an urgent essential issue" and is to promote peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia. Russia expressed appreciation of this position and stressed the need to secure peace and stability in the region by non-military means.

Hey.
Surprise like the 3 Harvard Business School professors who were shocked to find that growing government hurts the economy?
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6420.html
Or the Norwegian scientific study that basically shows that socialism is chilish?

Excellent image commentary.
I read that second story. All I could think was, “You needed an academic study to come to that conclusion?”
BTW- Those Harvard Business School Professors went into that study thinking the opposite. Against all history and common sense they thought more government would help the economy. But they needed actual proof to show themselves otherwise.
They needed NO proof to believe the lies in the first place though.

I understand the theory. But the SK have been able to defend themselves just fine for years. Given the NK artillery emplacements, our division would take huge casualties very quickly. Europe was different. We had serious forces that were there to fight and Europe was not capable of defending against the Soviets. The 30,000 on the DMZ in Korea are there to get killed. Yes, it raised the stakes. But I’m not sure how that advanced American interests. A Japanese tripwire force would be just as effective and they have a much bigger dog in that hunt. I’m all for deploying American troops to fight if that advances our national interests. I have a problem with deploying American troops as hostages.
