Tell me, why does "the industry" need to "correct itself"?
The "industry" has an excellent safety record. This was a one-off occurrence under difficult conditions. Nothing like it has ever happened before (unless Pemex was involved).
In this case, BP may well be responsible and, thus, due some serious consequences. But I fail to see how that stains an entire industry of refiners, producers, drilling, seismic and service companies.
Because BP pulled this going cheap crap, don't you think something needs to be corrected in their case. I am a "Drill Now" person, but I also know chances have been taken in the industry because of money.
It is not right that all of the oil industry will be made to suffer because of BP's screw up, but perception is everything to the general public.
What do you think the perception is right now to the people unfamiliar (most) with the oil industry?
Obummer, enviro-nuts and the Rats will have a field day hurting the oil industry, as a whole, because of BP's negligence.
