Latino groups blast Guard deployment By Jordy Yager - 05/26/10 05:42 PM ET
Two major Latino advocacy groups blasted President Barack Obamas plan to send 1,200 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, saying the National Guardsmen are unprepared to deal with border issues and that the move will overshadow immigration reform.
As we have seen time and time again, efforts to overhaul our broken immigration system have taken a back seat to dramatic escalations of border enforcement including placing troops on the U.S. border to serve in a function for which they have not been trained, said Rosa Rosales, the national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), one of the oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the United States.
Obama announced plans on Tuesday to send 1,200 National Guard troops to the border region to provide surveillance support and counternarcotics enforcement in the U.S.s ongoing attempt to crack down on illegal gun, money, drug and human smuggling operations.
Officials with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) echoed LULACs disappointment with the White Houses decision, saying the move is inadequate to address the real immigration problems of the region.
We are on a collision course of enforcement-only policies and, as experience shows, this will not solve the problem, said Janet Murguía, the president and CEO of NCLR. The White House must outline a clear plan of action. And Republican leadership must stop playing politics and do its part to solve the problem.
NJ Senator Menendez is not happy with the National Guard deployment to our borders.
He’s blaming Mcain.
Ahhh...kiss my AZ la raza...
We don't have a broken immigration system, we have a broken government. Oh yeah, and all the illegals have caused a real problem with LEGAL immigration.
The may be unprepared now but I bet they’ll soon figure it out.
Federal troops !?!!! How dare dose jankeees
Uhhh! They’ve been trained to secure a perimeter and prevent incursion. Isn’t that the essence of border patrol?
Since when do we let those who are trying to invade us dictate how we are to respond?
Agreed! The US immigration system is the most liberal in the world. It’s fine. The problem is the lack of enforcement of the existing federal and state laws.
We need to focus on enforcement, securing the borders and ridding the country of the criminal alien element.
We need to start firing on those identified as trying to cross the border illegally, and put La Raza on the list of terrorist organizations that threaten our national security. Every member of La Raza should be on the TSA No Fly List, as well.
Dear Rosa Rosales:
feel free to stand at the border and show us how you want it done...
blah, blah, blah....
So they are saying they don’t want the National Guard placing bottles of water and solar-powered air conditioners in the desert to make the trip more comfortable for the illegals?
Wow! Two truly socialist/communist groups that do not represent Hispanics, rather want to represent illegal immigration, decrying only a sliver of what the Mexicans do in their southern border.
Mark Levin talking about this thread right now!
The 1200 troops are for show - Obama won’t let them do anything from an enforcement standpoint. And La Raza knows it. Their complaint is show too.
How about a $2 extra on income tax to a border fence trust which will be specifically used to build this fence.
The only thing broken in our immigration system is that we allow 500,000 unskilled Mexicans in every year legally! IMHO unless you have something to offer America or are married to an American you should not be allowed in.
The money needs to be kept out of the government’s hands otherwise the wall will never get built.
That is a great idea! Someone who knows how please start the legalities for raising money because I sure would donate to it!
