North Korea gets army battle-ready: Report

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has put the Stalinist state's army on combat alert amid rising tensions after the March sinking of a South Korean warship was blamed on Pyongyang, a news report said on Tuesday.

A high-ranking official read Kim's orders on national television last week, South Korea's Economic Daily newspaper said, citing reports by North Korean refugees.

The order was issued after Seoul said Thursday that investigations had concluded that a torpedo fired by North Korea was responsible for the March 26 sinking of the corvette Cheonan, which killed 46 South Korean sailors.

Kim did not want war but North Korea was ready to repel any attack by the South, the orders said.

South Korean President Lee Myung Bak Monday announced far-reaching trade bans and said Seoul wanted the UN Security Council to discuss Pyongyang's "provocation", a move supported by Washington.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Pyongyang's actions the "most serious provocation" in the troubled Korean Peninsula and indicated his support for measures by the Security Council.

The Pentagon, meanwhile, announced joint US-South Korean navy manoeuvres that are to focus on anti-submarine drills and interdicting vessels on the high seas.

Pyongyang routinely puts its troops on high alert during those manoeuvres

The real world had better get serious about eliminating Dear Leader, before he makes Jim Jones and the Kool-Aid Party look like child’s play.

Big, Massive anti North Korean demonstration planned for 1400 hours tomorrow, Thursday 27 May, in downtown Seoul. It should be HUGE. Biggest such demonstration against Kim Jong il in 6 years, it is said. Many civic groups and organizations uniting suddenly to show force against the dictator.

Kim won’t survive any conflict. NK is an unsuccessful wart on China’s nose. It was needed by the Chinese during the cold war but it’s used up.

Will each DPRK soldier get a small rice ball and a cricket to eat before the big battle? This is one of the biggest bluffs in history. Does Red China really want all those refugees from their neighbor? That place has been a Potemkin village since 1953, and every intel analyst on Earth knows it. It’s like Cuba threatening to invade us. Laughable. Sure, they can destroy parts of Seoul with artillery, but then what?

The real world had better get serious about eliminating Dear Leader...

I agree with your sentiment, and apply it to him AND Kim Jong Il as well.

Zero will NOT be answering that 3AM call. He MAY, however be fundraising or campaigning for a democrat in danger of losing his/her job this Nov.

There’s a report on another FR thread that their submarine fleet on the eastern sea has gone dark.

GS, the "real world" doesn't really care what happens in Korea. Do you think the Europeans care? Do you think the Russians care? The Indians? Their attitude is, "Let the Americans handle it".

China and Japan "care". Japan more than China but I don't know how keen Japan is to exerting real power in Korea right now. Check your history.

Nope, its up to the Koreans and Uncle Sam. With Hussein in the White House, I'd say its probably up to the Koreans.

Kim’s sword rattling is getting old. Someone needs to take it from him and break it off in him. He has become a bore. I am seriously surprised that China is still putting up with his antics.

Haven't we all learned yet that everything they do is just a ploy to get concessions from the international community?

People, nothing even resembling war is going to happen. This is not a Tom Clancy novel.

If they have nukes, I don’t think they can be so easily dismissed. I’ve read assessments that says that might be able to grab and hold Seoul. Then what? Hold it hostage and nuke other SK power centers.
