Nothing wrong with the original AK-47. I saw Kalshanikov on one of those gun shows on History Channel and he said he was not a big fan of the 5.56 for the AK-74. The Kremlin for some reason got scared of the M-16 and told Kalshanikov to make adopt the AK-47 for the smaller round.

hmmmm..how is the Russian economy these days?

MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - An arbitration court has accepted a bankruptcy suit against the producer of Russia's famed Kalashnikov assault rifles, Russian media reported on Monday.

A court in the Urals republic of Udmurtia said on its website that the suit had been filed by a previously unknown company named Gremikha. It did not specify the connection between the plaintiff and Izhmash, the owner of the Kalashnikov plant.

The court said a hearing on the suit would be held on October 7.

Observers said bankruptcy would help Izhmash, Russia's largest firearms producer, to deal with its debt burden, but warned that new wave of unemployment would sweep the region.

They need a Bail Out.... Obama to the rescue!

It is probably based on AEK-971 and the AK-107/108 designs. AK-107 has replaced some of the AK-74’s in service with the MVD and some airborne units.

It’ll be a lot better when these new toys start showing up in the hands of our enemies, aimed at our guys....

Russia actually owns this firm. Bankrupt?

BTW, the Russians will be able to crank these out like candy when the time comes.

The Russians like weapons that use similar rounds as the enemy. They usually design a gun to fire the emery's round but the enemy can't fire theirs.

Wow. Russia has normal bankruptcy laws but in
Zimbab-America - the govt just grabs the bondholders money & rights and gives it to the unions/”workers.”

“Kalashnikov received Russia’s highest honorary title on his 90th birthday last November. Accepting the award, Kalashnikov voiced regret that his creation, the world’s most widely used rifle, has been often misused.”

At least twice, IIRC (which isn't always the case ;>). It was probably too complicated & unreliable (or too expensive) for your average Russian soldier.

(Or maybe it just sucked for some other reason... ;>)

Interesting that Izmash doesn’t even list the AK as a product anymore. Lots of Saigas and Tigrs, but no basic AK.
