Omaha police said have arrested three people in connection with the disappearance of an Omaha family.

Vanderlei and Jaqueline Szczepanik, along with their 7-year-old son, Christopher, were last seen on Dec. 17. They were living in and working on a church at 16th and Center streets in south Omaha.

Police said the three people, who did work for the family, have been accused of using the family's accounts. More than $4,000 was used for food and clothing items, police said.

Jose C. Oliveria-Coutinho, 35, Elias Lourenco-Batista, 29, and Valdeir Gonclaves-Santos, 30, have bee charged with unlawful use of a financial transaction device over $1,500.

"We are extremely concerned about the family’s well being due to these circumstances that have evolved during this investigation," said Lt. Darci Tierney in a news release.

Police said the three suspects used the victims' personal and business bank cards to withdraw money from ATMs.

The three suspects are all illegal immigrants from Brazil, police said. They were arrested on Monday.

Tierney said homicide detectives have been following up on the case and working closely with the Douglas County Attorney's office.

Police last week arrested Ricardo Gonzalez-Mendez on a charge of giving a false name when police questioned him on the family's disappearance.

Gonzalez-Mendez is in the country illegally, police said, but had been hired by the family for construction work.

The suspects face an arraignment at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Actually, they are sneaking into Mexico illegally and hopping freight trains through Mexico hobo-style. If the Mexican authorities catch them they are deported....if they are lucky.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. The names didn’t sound quite right for Spanish. More Portuguese.

Illegals even from Cuba pass through the Mexican border- though I don’t know why- seems it would be easier for them to go to Florida like they always have.

A LEGAL Hispanic cowboy near here was out checking cattle the other day and said an illegal came out of the brush and started talking to him. It freaked out the cowboy to find out the illegal was Cuban- it is strange.

It has been a story around here since early January. The family just “vanished”. They found their 2 vehicles several weeks later. One was in a repair shop and one just on the street. The neighborhood is South Omaha, which has many Hispanic immigrants (legal and not), not a suburbia environment. My guess is that the police have been “on to” these 4 guys for several months, and watching them, waiting for the right timing to arrest them. The police chief was interviewed on one of the news broadcasts, and basically said that they are hoping with 4 of them now under arrest, they can make some deals and get someone to talk.

I think there is little hope of the family being found alive.

Here is a bit of an update. I didn’t realize that ICE had at least a couple of them for several months.

This is sad, beyond heartbreaking, and of course we heard nothing of this in national news. I guess we should all consider ourselves fair game for the sacrosanct criminal illegals. My God!!
