Arizona Sheriff Wants Apology from Mexico for Its 'Threatening' Tourism Ad
Fox News ^ | May 24, 2010 | Joshua Rhett Miller

(edit)

"Are they threatening us? Do they not want us to go to Mexico for tourism? It's mindboggling," Arpaio told FoxNews.com on Monday. "I don't think it was in good taste."

Arpaio said he found the advertisement "inappropriate" and called on Mexican officials to apologize.

"I want everybody to call the Tourism Board," Arpaio said. "To me, it's a threatening type of advertisement."

Javier Tapia, coordinator of the Tourism Promotion Commission of Sonora, said the second version of the advertisement, which ran on Saturday, features the words "who want to have a great time" following the initial line "In Sonora we are looking for people from Arizona." A scene of beachgoers also can be seen in the reflection of the binocular lenses, an element that did not appear in the original "teaser" advertisement.

Tapia insisted neither the first nor second versions of the ad were intended as a threat.

"We want to be very aggressive in our push, but we're not trying to scare anybody," he told FoxNews.com. "We're looking for the opposite -- we want everyone to feel very welcome here in Sonora."

John Zidich, president and publisher of the Arizona Republic, said he was not aware of any complaints to thenewspaper regarding the advertisement. He declined to discuss its content.

SHERIFF ARPAIO CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF TRAVEL

TO MEXICO BY ARIZONANS

(Maricopa County, AZ) Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio today, reacting to a

reprehensible ad placed by the Sonoran Mexican Tourism Board in the Friday edition

of the Arizona Republic, is calling for all Arizonans to refrain from vacationing in

Sonora, Mexico until further notice.

The ad, a half page full-color advertisement, featured a military looking man gazing

through binoculars with words proclaiming, “We are looking for people from

Arizona.”

Arpaio says, “That ad went well beyond being irresponsible, it appears to threaten

Arizonans - a very valid concern given the current political climate.”

Arpaio, who lived and worked in Mexico as the Regional Director for the U.S. Drug

Enforcement Administration, says the Mexican government’s tourism board should

run new ads in the paper apologizing to all Arizonans.

In Saturday’s Arizona Republic, the ad was mysteriously altered to indicate Mexican

authorities are looking for Arizonans who want “to have a good time.”

“Any ad threatening or frightening Arizonans who are considering vacationing in

Sonora is in very poor taste,” Arpaio says. “Until that country’s government

apologizes, I sincerely hope Arizonans look elsewhere for a quick vacation spot.”

No matter how many criminals are locked up here, the vacancy sign is never turned off.

Instead, if prisoner numbers increase, jail supremo Sheriff Joe Arpaio simply orders extra tents. He says: “I will build tents to house 100,000 people before I ever let anybody out of jail early. If I have to, I will put up tents from here to Mexico.”

I hope & pray that conservatives have enough common sense to stay away from Mexico for any sort of holiday or vacation....and conversely I want to encourage any & all liberals to visit Mexico in droves. In fact, please drive there and travel all over the country....it’s safe, ya know. s/

I’m not into “going green” but the Sheriff’s idea of having the prisoners pedal a bike to create the electricity to run the TV is awesome! Talk about saving the planet!!! LOL! He plays Christmas carols around the holidays also! Whadda guy!

My sincere apologies....I had searched several times for anything relating to that post of Sheriff Joe’s and NOTHING came up, despite it having been tweeted several hours previously.
I hate it when that happens :-(

That’s okay, it happens to me too a lot of times when I search, don’t know why the search feature misses stories sometimes.

Anyhoo, you never know when you might be in the running for a
“FReeper Scoop of the Year” award, just wanted to be sure I’m in the lineup! ;-)
