Election Ads for Governor Blasted (NM-R Gov Primary)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | May 24, 2010 | Sean Olson

The head of the Republican Party of New Mexico waded into primary election mudslinging between gubernatorial candidate front-runners Allen Weh and Susana Martinez on Sunday, condemning radio and TV ads by Weh in a move some called unprecedented.

Chairman Harvey E. Yates Jr. called Weh ads attacking Martinez "misleading" and "inappropriate" while saying a Martinez ad attacking Weh was "reasonably supported."

"Dishonesty in political advertising should not be tolerated in either party," Yates said in a news release. "I believe it to be quite unfortunate that one of the Republican gubernatorial candidates has issued ads which are so misleading.

"I note that when Mr. Weh accuses Ms. Martinez of failure to pay her taxes, this can be taken as suggesting possible felonious conduct on the part of Ms. Martinez. This suggestion by Mr. Weh, without clear evidence, is inappropriate," Yates said.

Yates said he would not have spoken up about the ads if the attacks had not been misleading, but he felt he had to call out his own party when dishonesty was employed in the ads.

Weh's TV ad claims "Martinez failed to pay taxes," citing a State Auditor's Office report from 2008. The ad does not mention that the taxes were for temporary, contracted employees working part time for a summer in the District Attorney's Office, and not personal income taxes, for instance.

The auditor's report said she should have used a different process to hire those employees, which would have forced her office to pay employee taxes. Martinez quickly fixed the problem.

A Journal review of the expenses showed Martinez did not appear to violate any state regulations with the purchases, and the state Department of Finance and Administration signed off on the expenses.

The Martinez ad criticized Weh for supporting the Bush plan to revise immigration law including finding a solution for illegal immigrants who have been working in this country without committing any criminal acts.

Allen’s nomination is a one-Weh ticket for Denish to win in November.

It was noted by others in the article that it was unprecedented for a current party chairman (Yates) to criticize the previous party chairman (Weh) for his campaign ads. Yates said he established a three-person commission to review the ads and based on their conclusions issued the press release condemning both ads but singling out the Weh ad for its serious misleading content.

The oil and gas industry in New Mexico needs relief from the draconian regulations instituted by Richardson's oil and gas agency and his upcoming plans to control CO2 emissions from all industry in the state. He is slowly choking the goose that lays the golden eggs that pays for so much of NM's government especially schools.

Party chairman Yates is from the Yates petroleum family which is one of the largest independent oil and gas producers in the US.

Weh has ads all over the Hobbs area with very few for Martinez but Martinez depends on individual contributions while Weh is spending his own money.

At first, I endorsed Pete Domenici, Jr., but he was pretty clearly not ready for prime time out of the chute and switched to Martinez. The fact that Weh is running at all is insulting. He was an epic disaster as party chairman. When he announced awhile ago he was running, I just couldn’t believe the arrogance and gall.

Susana Martinez is only a point behind Weh. She has my vote.

I was flabbergasted to hear the ad on the radio this morning. It certainly does create the impression that Martinez failed to pay her personal taxes.

The ad did accomplish one thing: It convinced me not to support Weh. I intend to call Weh's campaign office tomorrow to say so.
