~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Carson, Colorado

Fort Carson is a United States Army installation located immediately south of Colorado Springs, primarily in El Paso County, Colorado.

Fort Carson is the home of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Brigade Combat Teams of the 4th Infantry Division, the 10th Special Forces Group, the 71st Ordnance Group (EOD), the 4th Engineer Battalion, the 759th Military Police Battalion, the 10th Combat Support Hospital, and the 43rd Sustainment Brigade. The post also hosts units of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve and the Colorado Army National Guard.

Fort Carson was established in 1942, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The city of Colorado Springs, Colorado purchased land south of the city and donated it to the War Department. Construction began immediately and the first building, the camp headquarters, was completed January 31, 1942. Camp Carson was named in honor of the legendary Army scout, General Christopher "Kit" Carson, who explored much of the West in the 1800s.

During World War II, a total of 104,165 soldiers trained at Camp Carson. Along with three other infantry divisions- the 71st, 104th and l0th Mountain -more than 125 units were activated at Camp Carson and over 100 other units were transferred to the Mountain Post from other installations.

The camp trained nurses, cooks, mule packers, tank battalions, a Greek infantry battalion and an Italian ordnance company-soldiers of any and every variety. Toward the end of the war, after the departure of the divisions and established units, Camp Carson trained replacement troops and provisional companies.

Fort Carson houses the 3 Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR), 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (ID), 43 ASG, and 10 Special Forces (SF). As a result, the Base has several vehicle maintenance facilities for tanks and other tracked and wheeled vehicles. A complete tank engine depot maintenance and dynamometer testing facility is also located at Fort Carson. The Butts Army Air Field (AAF) is an active runway and hangar facility used primarily by Army rotary-wing aircraft.

Fort Carson military operations and tenant activities include: the Army and Air Force Exchange (AAFES); Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO); Pacific Architects and Engineers (PAE) (which provide operations and maintenance support to the installation); a medical detachment (MEDDAC); dental activity (DENTAC); the Colorado Air National Guard, Explosive Ordnance Detachment (EOD); and Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees).

The Mission Statement at Fort Carson is “Fort Carson’s Mountain Post Team—best opportunity in the Army for soldiers to train, leaders to lead, families to grow and people to work. We are a first rate power projection platform (air and rail) and Post Mobilization Maneuver Training Center; a premier installation and committed community partner, providing combat-ready forces for the 21st Century.”

Thanks for the great thread. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Ft. Carson when the 3BCT 4ID returned from deployment in March of 08. Beautiful Fort. The best housing and facilities I've ever seen. His berthing was amazing!

Chris called the other day and says hi to you all and thanks for your support. He doesn't get online much these days period or he'd drop by. Internet is frustrating to him...pages load slow...and anything with lots of pictures don't load at all.

Shrew spit tames cancer cells

Last Updated: Monday, May 24, 2010 | 12:55 PM ET Comments124Recommend97

Shrew spit is under investigation by Canadian scientists as a potential screening test and treatment for breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. The saliva of the northern short-tailed shrew can paralyze prey

The northern short-tailed shrew, a mouse-like mammal with a long snout, is one of the world's few venomous mammal species. With one bite, its saliva can paralyze prey.

Biochemist Jack Stewart of Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., set out to find out how.

Stewart spent several years luring the animals with pepperoni and trapping dozens of shrews in his rural backyard before he eventually identified the chemical in shrew saliva that causes paralysis. Researchers then purified and synthesized it.

At first, Stewart thought the chemical — called soricidin — might be a potential painkiller, because it blocked nerve transmission. When he tested it on a random cell culture that happened to be ovarian cancer cells, however, he found the cells died — which was initially a source of annoyance to him.

"Then a light bulb came on," Stewart recalled....
