WINFIELD, Mo. - Mexican drug smugglers are increasingly peddling a form of ultra-potent heroin that sells for as little as $10 a bag and is so pure it can kill unsuspecting users instantly, sometimes before they even remove the syringe from their veins.

An Associated Press review of drug overdose data shows that so-called "black tar" heroin — named for its dark, gooey consistency — and other forms of the drug are contributing to a spike in overdose deaths across the nation and attracting a new generation of users who are caught off guard by its potency.

"We found people who snorted it lying face-down with the straw lying next to them," said Patrick O'Neil, coroner in suburban Chicago's Will County, where annual heroin deaths have nearly tripled — from 10 to 29 — since 2006. "It's so potent that we occasionally find the needle in the arm at the death scene."

It’s interesting to hear something of quality can come from that hell hole.

“Another reason we do not do drugs.”

Don’t do it: You just don’t know what they put in

The Mexicans aren’t stupid. They’re going to have to step on this stuff a little more. They are killing off their customer base.

Not very good business practice that, killing your customers.

But seriously, folks, the danger of overdose which this highlights is actually one of the harms of keeping psychoactive substances illegal: no quality control.

Someone didn't read the label? "Uncut" wasn't printed clearly?

There should be stricter packaging regulations, obviously.

Actually it sounds like the best argument for legalization I’ve heard in a while.

Good point. Like with booze; no one ever dies from alcohol related problems because it is clearly labeled.

Good grief.

Let’s make Kiddie Porn legal to; then the pictures will only be taken by professional photographers and devotees can “come from the shadows” like poor illegal aliens.

We’ll have idiots on FR now say, “If only we offered this stuff for free, people wouldn’t be (insert your stupid phrase of choice here: dying from it, helping organized crime, destroying the environment, picking their nose...)”

Our resident Drug Warriors won't care; just so long as the correct people end up dead.

Legalizing it would create a new set of problems.

Would you want to own a store selling heroin, and have to worry about addicts breaking into the store at night to get their “fix.”

I know this sounds harsh, but it’s like a marketing ploy...
Get some real pure stuff out there, and the addicts, who are already dancing with Death, will seek it out... looking for that more potent high, sure that ‘they’ will not OD.
