Clinton: Koreas security situation 'precarious'

By MATTHEW LEE (AP)

BEIJING — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that North Korea's sinking of a South Korean warship has created a "highly precarious" security situation in the region and that the Obama administration is working to prevent an escalation of tension that could lead to conflict.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing shortly after the White House issued a statement offering Washington's full and unequivocal support for Seoul, Clinton said all of North Korea's neighbors, including its chief ally China, understand the seriousness of the matter and want to "contain" it.

"We are working hard to avoid an escalation of belligerence and provocation," Clinton said. "This is a highly precarious situation that the North Koreans have caused in the region."

The U.S. will work with other nations to see that North Korea feels the consequences of its actions and changes its behavior to avoid "the kind of escalation that would be very regrettable," she said.

Clinton would not discuss the details of what the United States might do but noted that President Barack Obama had ordered U.S. military commanders to "to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression" from North Korea. The United States has 28,500 troops in South Korea.

Nixon used to do that. Preface everything with “let me be clear,” “let me be crystal clear”, “let me be totally, completely, spotlessly, absolutely, positively, CRYSTAL clear”... He also used to say “As I’ve said before” a great deal too.

Funny you should mention Nixon. Had the ‘Rats not stolen the election of 1960 (which Nixon actually won), the Soviets would never dared their Cuban Missile gambit, because they had taken the measure of Nixon as Vice President, saw his resolve in the ‘Kitchen Debate’ in Moscow vs. Khrushchev, and his coolness in a personal crisis when his limousine was attacked by rioters in South America. They knew not to eff around with Nixon.

But with JFK installed into the Presidency thanks to vote fraud in Illinois and Texas, the Soviets perceived him as weak, and they chose to test him. It was only through sheer luck that we avoided a nuclear exchange with the Soviets, but the price was an American pledge not to overthrow that sonuvabitch Castro. JFK wrote off the Cuban people and that is why we still have a Communist tyranny 90 miles from our shores.

How this Korean situation will turn out with a goofy undocumented Kenyan in the White House that has LESS experience than even the Buffoon from Plains Georgia, Jimmy STP Carter, remains to be seen.

Prediction: it’s not going to turn out well for us.

Is this what you were referring to as being just announced?

US plans naval exercises with South Korea:Pentagon
May 24 01:06 PM US/Eastern

The US military on Monday said it will carry out anti-submarine and other naval exercises with South Korea in the “near future” after a North Korean sub sank a South Korean warship.

The announcement came after an international investigation last week concluded that a North Korean submarine fired a heavy torpedo at the Cheonan on March 26, sinking the South Korean vessel and killing 46 sailors.

The decision to conduct anti-submarine as well as maritime interdiction exercises with Seoul’s military “are a result of the findings of this recent incident,” Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters.

He declined to offer more details of the “important” exercises but said they would take place “in the near future.”

The White House said earlier that President Barack Obama had directed his administration to review North Korea policy and commanded his armed forces to work closely with South Korea “to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression.”

The United States and numerous other nations have condemned the attack, seen in Seoul as one of the worst provocations since the 1950-53 Korean War. The North’s ally China, which wields a Security Council veto, has called on all sides to show restraint.

Yes, and God help us if the Obama Regime hasn’t thought out the next several moves to play.

IMO, what makes this escalating crisis real dangerous is that nobody really knows (except maybe the Chinese) what Kim may try to do next. Obama better have thought out ALL the potential contingencies of his actions.

We are in no position, given how spread out our military forces are at the moment, to fully implement OPLAN 2057 or 2059 without a draft

Hey South Korea: be happy there isn’t a cowboy in the White House but a man who will rely on international diplomacy to get the job done. You know international diplomacy? It’s that stuff you told us we needed to do instead of invading Afghanistan.

You South Koreans don’t like aggressive American politics? Let’s see how you feel about wimpy, French homosexual American politics....

We’ve been sending the wrong defense signals for quite some time now.

That is exactly what started the Korean War. In 1950 US Secretary of State Dean Acheson said that South Korea was not within its defense permiter -- so North Korea took that as a green light to take over South Korea.

South Korea is 20 times richer than the North. But do they have the military capability to win a war against them ?

Not if China gets involved.

And the USA under Obama does not have the stomach to fight for South Korea any longer.

Therefore here’s the only solution — COMPLAIN, PROTEST, CONDEMN what Kim Jong Il’s goons did but you can really do nothing.

What exactly did we do when Russia downed one of Korea’s commercial airlines during the time of Reagan (1983) ?

The aircraft was en route from New York City via Anchorage to Seoul when it strayed into prohibited Soviet airspace because of a navigational error. Hundreds of Americans were killed. There was nothing we could have done then.

Well, North Korea has been threatening war and now they’ve sunk a South Korean ship with a submarine-launched torpedo, so now they’re officially in a state of war. Hope they can take what they deal out—South Korea could obliterate them if they wanted to.

“I’m confident that a few “Let me be clear” statements from Clinton and Obama will fix things right up.”

Sure, and for a bonus, we’ll announce our ICBM tests ahead of time and hey, we’ll even let KJ the ILL drive the boat (sub). We lowered our shield in Europe, Russia is laughing,,,we kiss radical islamic butt and the Taliban is more emboldened, we don’t enforce our borders, and we punish hard-working Americans (and their children) financially as well as emotionally bait and slam them. China is just waiting for the right tipping point and we are toast......Meanwhile the annointed one plays golf, waves his magic hands and gives the American public the finger.....and people actually want to vote for this guy?

This administration is in way over it's head. First begging China now the rest of the world to do something. Second rate political hacks acting on the world stage.

Perhaps it may dawn on them why America has had to take the lead at times.
