President Lee Myung-Bak will Monday outline South Korea's resposnse to the sinking of a warship that Seoul said was torpedoed by a North Korean submarine, claiming 46 lives, his spokesman said.
The attack on the Cheonan near the disputed border with the North on March 26 sparked outrage and grief in South Korea, but Seoul has apparently ruled out any military counterstrike for fear of triggering full-scale war.
As international anger grows over the attack, Lee, in an address to the nation, will also outline his planned appeal to the UN Security Council over the sinking of the corvette.
"The president will announce... measures, some for us to take and also others to be taken through international cooperation," senior presidential spokesman Lee Dong-Kwan said in a statement Sunday.
"He will also mention a plan to bring the case to the UN Security Council," the spokesman said, adding that President Lee would ask the Council to impose further sanctions on his country's neighbour.
The statement follows remarks made by South Korean officials, who said Seoul would seek sanctions against North Korea after an international inquiry found "overwhelming" evidence it had attacked the Cheonan.
The North has repeatedly denied the allegation after Seoul Thursday released the investigators' report, which found that the 1,200-tonne corvette had been destroyed by a torpedo.

I agree. This is why that South Korea become confrontational towards North Korea.
S. Korea has little choice but to go to the United Nations. Seeing as how the world is keeping the peace in the region - errr the United States is keeping the peace.
It isn’t like South Korea is going to just start dropping bombs.
Normally I would say - eh whatever. This stuff has been going on forever. However, this time it is different. This is a significant event.

I believe you. I think that President Lee should show the world that he will not allow the murder of 46 sailors to go unpunished.
The UN will likely make a statement that South Korea should consider the virtue of forgiveness toward its brothers up North.
What would you do were you South Korea's president? What action would you take that would make you NOT be an Obama clone? I ask because it seems some have cogent solutions to a situation that is actually very tricky.
Obviously North Korea did it. No questions about that.
Obviously South Korea cannot just sit and look pretty. No questions about that.
The question is what does it do? Probably strongly worded letters and reduction in food and oil aid. Sadly.
That is, unless someone comes up with a way to neutralize the between 10,000 to 20,000 tube and missile artillery pieces that are aimed at Seoul, South Korea. Come up with a way to neutralize that arty, and PyongYang is a paper tiger (even with its nuclear devices ...the main issue is not the nukes, but rather the artillery). Without a way to neutralize the artillery barrage that could reduce Seoul to smouldering ruins, North Korea can act the fool knowing nothing much will happen.
Obviously there are ways around that ...the first being the use of tactical nuclear weapons (will not happen with the Obama administration, and would also NOT have happened with the Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, and even Reagan administrations ....even going back further. Thus it is not an Obama specific problem. American servicemen have lost their heads to axes at the DMZ with nothing happening). The second way would be for China to talk down their rabid lap-dog (problem is China can be quite nebulous at times ...it is in their best interest for them to put PyongYang on a leash, making lil' Kim know who is boss, but Beijing also seems to like having the N.K option where it serves as an irritant to the West). Thus, without the use of tactical nuclear weapons, or China telling its yapping mutt to shut the heck up, what solutions are available?
Personally I would thing a covert sinking of a N.Kom ship (hey, those darn exploding reefs can be a nuisance) is one, but I would like to know what solutions you have. Particularly regarding the arty. Thanks.

While I have every faith in the SK people (esp. fully adult generations), their leaders...leave something 2b desired.
My belief is that when GOSK promises the Norks will “pay a price”, that means that their bag this year might get a little lighter.
