GOP Wins Special Election in Obama’s Hawaii

From the Honolulu Advertiser [1]:

Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou has won the special election in urban Honolulu’s 1st Congressional District, the first Republican sent to Washington, D.C., to represent the Islands in two decades.

According to the state Office of Elections, Djou leads with 39.5 percent of the vote, followed by 30.8 percent for state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa and 27.6 percent for former congressman Ed Case. The remaining 11 other candidates attracted the rest of the vote.

The results are for ballots mailed in or dropped off through Friday and a portion of ballots received today, accounting for most of the votes cast in the winner-take-all special election. The Office of Elections plans to release a final count later tonight.

Djou would serve out the remaining months of former congressman Neil Abercrombie’s term in Congress, which ends in January 2011. Abercrombie resigned in February to concentrate on his campaign in the Democratic primary for governor.

The September primary and November general election will determine who replaces Abercrombie in Congress. Djou would be the first Republican from Hawaii sent to Congress in 20 years and only the third since statehood.

Is Djou just another RINO or a true blue Conservative? Never the less, we're seeing a trend.

Just wait. Soon the one line prophets will arrive on this thread to predict defeat for him in November. We will also have lectures on how Hawaii should have elected a Jim DeMint or Michael Bachmann conservative to the House and how there fore this means nothing.

Congratulations to Charles Djou. I heard him interviewed on the radio (sorry, I forget which show) and I believe he is the real deal.

It’s not a trend. It was an open race and he got less than 40%. The left will probably have a candidate in November that will get the other 60%. We need to be realistic and realize that it’s an uphill battle all the way. While we need to think like winners, we need to keep our guard up and fight as if we are about to lose our lives. Overconfidence is a dangerous thing when fighting communists..

One does not make a trend. Nevertheless, this is welcome news.

BTW, I don’t expect Djou to be more than a marginal conservative, but he is still an improvement.

A win for a RINO in Hawaii is like a hard core Conservative willing in DC. Don’t push your luck - This is a huge victory.

Now in the scheme of things, it may not matter if things keep going downhill, but it is a start. Even a RINO can become a believer if the majority is NOT... Just have to keep up the voting patterns and eventually, all those RINO’s will become conservatives just to keep their jobs (kind of like all those progressive Democrats that think because they are in the majority, they rule)...

“We need to be realistic and realize that it’s an uphill battle all the way.”

Well, you win the Captain Obvious Award. After all, to even ask whether or not Djou is the genuine article is to suggest these elections are not a slam dunk for conservatives. As a matter of fact, I have yet to read any comments which express a sense of “Overconfidence”.

Regardless of your “nothing going on here, people. Move along”, this is significant. I was born and raised in the islands. It’s as liberal as China. I take that back, it’s more liberal than China.

LOL, you mean like the, "I am so disappointed in Sarah Palin for endorsing McCain and not being the disloyal, backstabbing ingrate I wanted her to be," crowd? I turned those idiots off months ago. It's easy enough - - just chuckle to yourself and keep scrolling.

Nothing stupid about pointing out no can predict the future and those who post one liners predicting failure are helping liberals who live and breath creating what they hope are self-fulfilling prophecies of Republican defeat.

Yes it is. With crooked elections (ACORN / SEIU influence) we need to have a 10% wider margin.

Each race has to be fought on its own terms, in its own geographic area, and at its own time. It's not a great idea to be too doctrinaire in politics. We just do the best we can under the circumstances.

Actually the real battle is to get our side motivated and keep it motivated throughout the coming months, and not to just watch from the sidelines.

What are you talking about? Specter lost in a Democratic primary to a Democrat. Whether or not Republicans will be able to pick up this seat will not be known until November. In fact, it likely would have been an easier pickup if Specter got the nomination.

There have been some wins in the normally liberal areas: New Jersey Governor and Massachusetts Senator. However, there also have been losses - PA12, NY23 (I think one other that I can not recall). This, in fact, is the first Republican House pickup in quite some time. It is a hopeful sign, it is not a trend.

This is good news and it is the first special election that the Rs have won.

Let us hope this guy can hold on in November due to being an incumbent and pretty popular pol in general.

Yup. That's them. The same ones who express open mouthed astonishment that Scott Brown does what he, repeatedly, made clear during the campaign he would do: vote with Democrats at times.

Yes, it is amazing that some people got so enthralled at the prospect of a “Republican” winning the seat formerly held by the swimmer that they missed the part that Brown is a just another scumbag with terrible political instincts. Since he has decided to piss all over the “base” of voters that got him elected in the first place he’ll be gone in the next election (~2 years) anyway, so who cares?

Scott Brown put more seats in play that have ever been in play in my lifetime. He helped mobilize the Tea Party because he showed safe Democrat seats could be taken. Democrats have to spend money defending seats they never thought they would have to fund because of, in large part, Scott Brown. And they can’t do triage well because they do not know where the next threat to a “safe seat” will emerge. For those things his win was a huge victory even if he voted with Democrats all the time.

Ok, go vote for the Dem candidates instead. You may as well. Then see what you get. That’s how we got Obama and Dem majorities. Like it?
