The nation reacts to stolen valor
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | May 22, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 05/22/2010 6:20:22 PM PDT by Graybeard58

Here's a sampling of reaction to the revelation that Attorney General Richard "Rambo" Blumenthal, the Democratic U.S. senatorial candidate, falsely claims he served in the Vietnam war: "Lame excuses for Semper Lie; Conn. pol admits he's no 'Nam vet" — New York Post headline

"What else has he been lying about? — Andrew Breitbart, echoing the thoughts of millions

"This Dick Blumenthal even looks a little like Eliot Spitzer. And now it turns out ... even Jane Fonda spent more time in Vietnam than he did." — Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr

"Vietnam is apparently not (his) only lie. Last month, on Joe Scarborough's MSNBC program, Blumenthal falsely claimed, 'I have never taken PAC money' — but Federal Election Commission records show that he took more than $220,000 from political action committees. Blumenthal's campaign says he meant past elections. 'Misspoke' again, it seems." — Investors Business Daily

"Those who served in uniform during the Vietnam era also deserve our gratitude, which makes Mr. Blumenthal's claim to be something he is not so outrageous." — Richard DiFederico, Connecticut commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars

"Blumenthal promised to stay in the race and Democrats think that the campaign will move quickly beyond this incident. We are not so sure. There is now a very long and deep scratch in Blumenthal's Teflon, and the tougher the Teflon, the more damaging the scratch. Voters are now likely to see Blumenthal as more of a typical politician than he's ever been." — Cook's Political Report

"Many Republicans are probably rejoicing at the news of Blumenthal's despicable treachery, which by the way is illegal under the Stolen Valor Act, but remember phony veteran/phony hero status is no disqualifier for high office if you are Democrat. Remember how the entire Democratic Party and their media pets went into solid denial over John Kerry's phony Vietnam adventures and his four, count 'em folks, four phony Purple Hearts. Even in the face of overwhelming evidence from those with whom he served that Kerry was unfit for command, the Democrats and their media toe suckers maintained the obvious lie that he was a true war hero. I suppose under Democrat terms he is and so is Blumenthal. How utterly sad." — Russ Vaughn, American Thinker blog

"Could we kindly have an end to candidates who lie — no euphemisms, please — get caught by the press and then prattle on about their integrity?"— Howard Kurtz, Washington Post media critic

"Come on. Let's be fair about it. ... We all know guys who fought in the Tet offensive but err by saying that they were actually serving as a clerk to a United States Supreme Court justice after enjoying five draft deferments." — New York Daily News

"The proof that Sgt. Blumenthal is in trouble is that his defense against the charge that he made false statements about his Vietnam record is to deny that he received 'special treatment," an accusation nobody has made." — James Taranto, opinionjournal.com

"I don't know how a person could lie about such a thing. I don't know how you, I, anyone could look at the face of another and say they were in Vietnam, that they were a Marine in Vietnam, with all the merit attached to that claim, if it were not true. ... (F)or anyone to lift a finger to put (Richard Blumenthal) in the United States Senate, for that I find no way to accept. The United States Senate cannot take on the morally dead weight of this candidate without honor." — Chris Matthews, MSNBC

"Dick Blumenthal and I have known each other for almost 40 years, and I've always known him to be the most honorable of people. ... I've known him to be nothing but the most honorable of human beings in public life." — Corrupt Democrat Christopher "Sen. Countrywide" Dodd

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704302304575214491462332922.html?mod=googlenews_wsj shows that Blumenthal’s ethics are no better than those of a common thief (as illustrated by his advocacy of lawsuits against gun manufacturers, and his role in bringing in appraisers to lowball property values for seizure by eminent domain).

It means Matthews apparently doesn't understand what's going on.

I think much of this is a downstream effect of the anti-Kerry veterans’ movement of 2004. Many people decided then not to sit on their hands the next time US troops and veterans are smeared as war criminals, denigrated as unemployable psychos, or have their honor stolen by liars and pretenders. That’s why, for example, Kerry’s own snide “work hard or you’ll get stuck in Iraq” remark so effectively torpedoed his embryonic 2008 presidential campaign.

That’s a far cry from the gullible public acceptance of the lies Kerry, the VVAW, Fonda, Uncle Walter and a host of others peddled about US war crimes back in 1971. Note also the collapse of the recent “Iraq Veterans Against the War” propaganda remake amid a barrage of online fact-finding and fraud exposure. Again, a very different outcome than during the Vietnam War days. These are positive signs, and I for one hope to see them continue.

What’s the difference between Blumenthal and Jane Fonda?

Jane went to Vietnam.

Chrissy ducked into the Peace Corps to get out of serving in uniform, so he might want to shut his piehole.

Thanks for the ping Graybeard. Dodd, his political ship awash in dishonor, and he still believes he should create larger holes to drain it.

""Those who served in uniform during the Vietnam era also deserve our gratitude, which makes Mr. Blumenthal's claim to be something he is not so outrageous."

But it is not the same thing. Please recall the outright abuse heaped upon President Bush because he honestly stated he served in the Air National Guard during Vietnam.

I actually have more respect for those who ducked into the Peace Corps and are honest about it than those who lie about their "service".

Maybe he was on special missions with Yon Kerry in Cambodia for not yet elected President Nixon.

He can’t talk about it. Very hush hush.

I don’t buy this feigned liberal outrage over Blumenthal!

These are the same people who spit on VietNam Veterans coming home and would have done the same during Iraq if they could have gotten away with it.

Blumenthal is an example of all liberals today-—people who mask their true self just to get votes.
