Beethoven knew just how good he was. Those last quartets are amazing.

The Quartet in B-flat, Op. 130, has a short slow movement, titled "Cavatina", that is one of the most beautiful -- and sad -- tunes ever written in a major key. The middle portion of the movement goes into 7 flats and is the best description of the "valley of the shadow of death" that I've ever heard.
