Immigration Law in Arizona Reveals G.O.P. Divisions By JENNIFER STEINHAUER May 21, 2010
LOS ANGELES Republican lawmakers and candidates are increasingly divided over illegal immigration torn between the need to attract Latino support, especially at the ballot box, and rallying party members who support tougher action.
Arizonas new measure, which requires that the police check the documents of anyone they stop or detain whom they suspect of being in the country illegally, has forced politicians far and wide to take a stance. But unlike in Washington, where a general consensus exists among establishment Republicans, the fault lines in the states where the issue is even more visceral and immediate are not predictable.
Conservative Republican governors like Jim Gibbons of Nevada, Robert F. McDonnell of Virginia and Rick Perry of Texas have criticized the Arizona law. But some more moderate Republicans, like Tom Campbell, who is running in the partys Senate primary in California, have supported it.
The decision on whether to support or oppose the law can have almost immediate political consequences. The latest evidence may be Meg Whitmans declining fortunes.
For months, Ms. Whitman, the former chief executive of eBay, enjoyed a substantial lead over her principal rival for the Republican nomination for governor of California, Steve Poizner. But in recent weeks, she has seen her advantage slip significantly, in no small part because Mr. Poizner has hammered her on her opposition to the Arizona law.

Poll after poll shows the American people want enforcement overwhelmingly. And they are against amnesty. The Stupid Party deserves to be defeated if it can’t show a little backbone. They have a winning issue and are afraid to use it.
When a constituency has the "what's in it for US?" mentality, they vote for the ones who will give them the maximum freebies, paid for by the taxpayers who work for a living and EARN THEIR OWN WAY.
We have nearly a 50-50 split now amongst those who want entitlements up the wazzoo, and those who want the American way of life to be returned where we depend on ourselves, and don't want to live off others.
Well said! and so true!
Propaganda
Half Puerto Rican and i vote bye bye
I’ll join in calling Bull S-—!!!

But we have a permanent Republican majority because Reagan put through the 1986 amnesty. Right?
A substantial percentage of “legal” Latinos (ie Hispanics) like myself wants these idiots to enforce the borders. It would be a travesty to those of us who followed then law, waited on line. Had to wait over 5 years to be approved etc.. to have a bunch of people who snuck across the border to jump ahead of then line and make the rest of the law abiding population look like jerks because we decided to follow the rules.
This article completely ignores the American people sentiment and establishes the typical NY Times premise of how the issue can be exploited to divide the Republican Party.
Despite many predictions, Obama did not "provoke a backlash among white voters," according to research compiled by Stewart and Ansolabehere. However, the percentage of blacks voting Democratic rose from 88 percent in 2004 to 95 percent in 2008. Hispanic voters -- who had been drifting into the Republican camp in recent years -- heavily favored Obama; Hispanics voting Democratic rose from 56 percent to 67 percent. "This additional support among nonwhites proved decisive," Stewart and Ansolabehere concluded.Indeed, "had blacks and Hispanics voted Democratic in 2008 at the rates they had in 2004, McCain would have won," they wrote.
A lot of hispanics do vote GOP.
Are there Republicans (other than Juan and Lindsey) still stupid enough to think Latino votes can be won by supporting amnesty and pandering?
GOP better make up its mind..It either supports Americans or illegals...so should the American hispanic population..they either support the law or they dont. the arizona illegal law is less than the federal law allows..so what is the gripe...
This is a hit piece (what else is new?) by the NYTs trying to tell its readers that America really does not want immigration reform. Don’t be fooled by this. The NYTs is scared to print an article stating that dems want amnesty for all illegals. This article is a smoke screen.
The Stupid Party will be defeated if they continue to miss prime opportunities to side with the voters. While a recent poll shows 84% of Americans are in favor of Arizona's immigration law, the GOP lawmakers sat on their duffs rather than walking out when Felipe trashed the Arizona law before congress. The 84% of Americans who will vote in November and 2012 most likely will never be made aware that nearly all the democrats gave Calderon a standing ovation when he spoke against Arizona law.
The Establishment Republican politicians - often RINOs... and/or Republican behind the scenes ‘movers and shakers’ are ALL WET when it comes to assessing the importance and impact of the “Hispanic Vote”... First of all not all American Citizen Hispanic voters sympathize with illegal aliens or the need for Amnesty ... many do - a lot don’t. Pandering to Hispanics on the illegal alien issue is just plain stupid...
Why? Because there is no need to do so... In the 2009 Presidential Elections about 130M adult “American Citizen voters (hopefully all citizens)... about 70M for Osama Hussein Obama... and about 60M for GW Bush...
There are about 217M adult U.S. Citizens who could vote - but only about 130M actually did... This leaves 87M American Citizens who could be persuaded to vote Conservative - Republican...
The Tea Parties are doing a good job of getting many of the 87M potential American citizen voters aroused and out to vote...
This previously non participating 87M is the secret weapon to win in November 2010 and November 2012... NOT PANDERING TO HISPANICS...
Out of 87M previous non voters - we only need 10-12-15M to vote Conservative - Republican to win the House of Representatives and the Senate and eventually the Presidency.
We don’t need to pander to Hispanics - we just need to get out the vote...
Correction “2009” Presidential Elections should read “2008”...
The 'rats I understand, they just want more welfare voters after amensty.
Tom Ridge on Greta effectively calling for amnesty.
