Will Rust Belt Rural Voters Bitterly ‘Cling’ To Democrats?
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 5/20/2010 | Ed Carson

Barack Obama, before a sympathetic San Francisco audience in April 2008, argued that people in small towns — notably in industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania — were bitter and “cling to guns or religion.” But one takeaway from Tuesday’s special election in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District is that Rust Belt rural voters might “cling” to voting for Democrats. Republicans had high hopes that Tim Burns could win the late John Murtha’s seat. Yet Mark Critz, a former top Murtha aide, ended up winning 53%-44%.

The main thing is that they vote for the right person, not the party. The old, lifers, in Congress have to go. They have done nothing but hurt this country.

This will be the most import mid-term election of our lifetime. We need to turn out in force. The winner in PA ran on conservative-prolife views. But he will voter for Pelosi when he reaches DC. We need to make sure that everyone knows a Rat vote is a vote for Pelosi and Reid and Obamacare.

The senate primary being so contentious probably bought people out on that side. I’m not saying it was the difference but it could only help the dem.

Maybe in areas like PA-12 where they outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 and have strong union history. But an unemployed Democrat is no better off than an unemployed Republican, and they care just as much about the kind of future their kids and grandkids are looking at. So I see PA-12 as an anomaly and the trend will be quite unpleasant for Queen Nancy come November.

BINGO!

There are countless Democrats who ran on conservative values and politics, only to vote lockstep with Pelosi and Reid.

Democrats run on conservative platforms, but they always vote with the liberals against the best interests of our nation.

Considering that Dems outnumber GOP 2:1, that there was a bitter Democrat Primary going on, and that the Dem Candidate claimed to be a good 'ol boy, gun-totin', bible-believin', pro-lifin' Conservative, losing by only 8 points is impressive for the GOP.

Just wait until November, when Critz is exposed as a tea-sippin', Mao-quotin', bible-burnin' Marxist.

Absolutely! I know a few of the people they are talking about here and they simply don't seem capable of understanding the situation around them. They will vote against there own interest time and again.

One of the most difficult things to do in life it to realize that most of what you have believed your entire life is for the most part wrong. A lot of these folks believe the current Democratic Party is still the party of Harry Truman or even JFK (I kid you not). These troglodytes will never learn.

I live in the rust belt, Michigan, God help us. Bad enough half of Detroit homes are being demolished. Dead and dying state. Hopefully all the rats are jumping ship and moving somewhere else.

At this point, I have no idea. I do believe that Pelosi is out.....one way or another. I think the people are tired of her and really do want change. At least I hope that’s the case.

Sorta hard to compete with everything in a district named after a Democrat and half the voters are union.

But he will voter for Pelosi when he reaches DC.

I don't believe that had much to do with his winning. The larger factor is that he was connected by the hip to Murtha, so in PA-12 voters' minds, the pork will keep coming. I don't give a sh*t what people claim about too much government spending getting under the craw of voters. If those voters know the pork is coming in, they'll throw down with the candidate they think will get it for them.
