Poll: Six out of 10 voters support Proposition 14

Sixty percent of voters support a proposed overhaul California's primary system, according to a poll released Wednesday by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Proposition 14, placed on the June 8 ballot by the Legislature as part of last year's budget deal, would replace the current party primaries with a system where candidates of all party affiliations run on the same primary ballot. The two candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of party, would advance to the general election.

Twenty-seven percent of voters said they did not support the measure, and 13 percent are undecided. The results show a four-point uptick in support since the pollsters last asked likely voters about the measure in March.

Support was notably higher among Independents and self-described "moderate" voters. About two-thirds of respondents from those groups said they would back the measure.

The poll results suggest that proponents' main argument -- that Proposition 14 would allow voters to choose the best candidate in the primary regardless of party ties -- resonates with voters. About 80 percent of respondents said it was very or somewhat important to vote in the primary for whatever candidate they want.

Why not just do away with primaries and do this for the General Election? Then make it a requirement that you hold run offs until one candidate gets 50.1 of the vote

Bizarre.

I almost want ‘em to try it, just to see what the outcome would be.

Kalifornia is pretty much lost to America. Might as well use ‘em for experiments.

Ever time I start to imagine that California has already come up with every inane idea possible, they prove me wrong.

This is a bad idea...
The party members should nominate whom they want to represent them in the general.

But, there is something I’d like to see in the generals -
“instant runnoff”.

You vote for who you prefer as “1”, your second preference as “2”, and maybe a third.

If the top “1” vote getter doesn’t get 50% + 1, then you count the “1” and “2” votes.

This way, you could vote “Tea Party” as “1” and “GOP” as “2”, and not “waste” your vote.

“instant runnoff”.

I like this idea as well. You could actually do away with the primaries altogether if you had these.

This is part of Abel Maldonado's 30 pieces of silver in exchange for his vote on last year's budget.

Abel and Prop 14 must be defeated!

How about not putting party affiliation on the ballot at all. Force voters to determine in advance the candidate stance on the issues. Nahhhh, never happen. It would disadvantage the illiterate and uneducated if they can’t be “told” who to vote for.

So California really wants a system where no choice is offerred and only big money candidates with name recognition ever have a chance? I do believe that candidates should have to get 50+ % but only after running in the party primary.

This dangerous law was cooked up by Arnold and that vile creep GOP turncoat Jose Campos who voted with the Dems on last year budget crisis .
Jose can win in aGOP primary ever again so Arnie and Jose created this dangerous idea.

The key point of this resolution is that the top two vote getters would be the only choice on the ballot.

So if two Democrats were the top two for an office, they would be the only choices allowed (no write in). The Republican candidate would be knocked out of the race before the general election.

How does make it fair to all? Independence and third party candidates would never appear on any general election ballot if this proposition passes.

It is a sneaky way for the Democrats to gain even more control of California.

The people of California are sick of the morons in the CA Assembly who have led the state into the toilet bowl with the aid of the Governator.

Why not just do away with primaries and do this for the General Election?

Sure, we could do that. We could also just do away with elections altogether and let people just volunteer to rule us. Or, better yet, we can just have the families of the various politicians step in as soon as a parent dies.

It would reduce choice and move everybody to the center. Nothing would change, as it it would facillitate government by endless beauracracy.

Perfect for the apolitical, brain-dead, "independent" electorate.

Support was notably higher among Independents

So Independents don't want 3rd party candidates on the general ballot?
