...cutting off direct largess to individuals does NOT mean cutting off aid to the destitute.

The problem comes in with just who gets to define "destitute" and what criteria they use. There are a lot of people who think destitute is no cable, cell phone, or high speed internet. I hear what you're saying, but we need to make sure of what our standards will be. We also need differeniate between those who can't and those who won't, because a number of those who are "destitute" are that way because they won't help themselves, not because they can't.

You'll need this trick on your farm. I've seen it done. It absolutely works!

So, other than gold (which will likely be confiscated if these predictions come true)where does one invest their 401(k) funds to protect against dollar devaluation?

I would like to know this, too. Would it be best to cash in and pay the penalties?

The Jungle Bucket in my tagline works too. I bought five of them so that my neighbors can help make drinking water instead of just coming to try to take mine.

2010 & 2011 predictions: Pray hard that these are wrong

Prayer doesn't hurt.

If you have a toothache, it's OK to pray about it; but the smart thing to do is to pray while you're on your way to the dentist.

If the nation places its security and prosperity into the hands of marxists, communists, muslims (and their sympathizers), and anti-Americans of all stripes, it is OK to pray about it.

But you had better be praying about it while you are on the campaign trails for better political replacements; while you are stocking up on food, fuel, tools, and other supplies for the most certain coming shortages; while you are preparing for the worst economic catastrophe since the fall of Rome; while you are preparing for the worst combinations of international and internal warfare since the Dark Ages.

God helps those who help themselves, as individuals or as nations. Those who persistently choose stupid leadership, and then rely solely on prayer to save themselves and/or their nations, repeatedly disappear into the dustbin of history.

I bet almost none of it will happen.

I pray for God's will to be done.

If these things are in God's will, then so be it.

I certainly don't want to see people suffer, but the bible tells us things like these will most certainly happen...

With an economic catastrophe like we are facing, there may be well over 50% unemployment. As with the Great Depression, willingness and ability to work will become meaningless when there are no jobs.

In the GD, the government tried to provide the jobs, but that was just a bandage. This time, probably the best bet would be for each State to issue their own ‘scrip’ currency, with much of their citizenry doing what amounts to day labor in what are currently legitimate jobs, in exchange for room and board.

It turns the whole concept on its ear. Whatever your job is, keep doing it but being paid only in scrip. The State will temporarily keep you in shelter and give you food, and you can use the scrip to buy whatever else you need from local businesses.

This is economic “treading water” during massive unemployment. It is phased out when mutually supportive businesses start making real money profits again, enough to replace some of the scrip they are paying with dollars. The scrip has primed the pump to get back into a normal economy.

The idea is to keep people in shelter and with food until market forces can get running again. Scrip will protect them from dollar fluctuations and shortages, local businesses will still have their production and distribution channels, and people will still be buying their stuff.

Good management comes in ways like motivating people to maintain their shelter, the State using its concentrated dollars to buy products not made in the State, like pharmaceuticals, and keeping tight control over scrip wages and prices.

I think that the reality would be a whole lot less pleasant but that's just me. To each their own.

Interesting. Tell us more! What do you mean?

In my case, I have the land, but it is hard work without gas/deisel. Without a tractor and power tools, I mean.

I had a beautiful patch of savoy cabages; simply awesome, big, leafy, wonderful plants heading up nicely and then the caterpilars came. I now have swiss cheese cabbage filled with dead caterpillars and caterpillar crap! You see, I used BT on the plants some time ago, it took only a day or two for the caterpillars to hatch and take off eating, then a day or two later they all died in mass. What a mess!

If my family was relying on me to put food on the table, it wouldn't be with cabbage.

Anyway, corn is up and looks nice. Happy to see that, what with all the rain we had over the winter. Still, the weather sure has dried up lately (looks nervously at cloudless sky and drying soil....).

You see my point. :-) BIG difference between raising a couple of tomato plants so that you can have fresh BLTs for a few weeks... and a 2-acre-garden where, if the deer get into the corn, you just don't have those calories available next winter.

Never mind the work involved with taking care of a garden that big, sans power tools. Heck, it's hard work WITH power tools.

But, like I said, lots of people like to sit around and fantasize about What Might Happen If It All Hits The Fan. Me, I prefer my life with modern comforts, thank you very much.

No, I expected he would win, with about 350 electoral votes. I was a lot closer to right than many Freepers. So there you go.

Gold is the wealth preserver,
it’s not meant to be the replacement currency.

Use silver for that.

Let me testify that divining rods work... but only for some people, for some reason.

And, what are you finding?
Metal? Water? Oil?

A far more sensible approach would be to do the opposite, by restricting how electronic currency can be used for speculative purposes, to cause a serious deflation of cash. This could be done quickly with a 1 for 10 deflation, that is, a dime can buy what a dollar could buy.

Causing another Great Depression by intentionally causing a 90% deflation is a great idea.

Just look at all the great, conservative programs that came out of the Great Depression. We'd get even better conservative programs this time. LOL!

Whoa. Restricting electronic currency for speculative purposes would pretty much put an end to speculation I have to think. Why is it the people that want to control speculation understand the least about it?

90% deflation in one fell swoop? Dear lord. Save us from the people who would save us from ourselves.
