Orszag on tough job market for college grads: They “graduated at the wrong time”

Ten months after graduating from Ohio State University with a civil-engineering degree and three internships, Matt Grant finally has a job — as a banquet waiter at a Clarion Inn near Akron, Ohio.

“It’s discouraging right now,” said the 24-year-old, who sent out more than 100 applications for engineering positions. “It’s getting closer to the Class of 2010, their graduation date. I’m starting to worry more.”

My daughter graduated last May with a BS in business and is working on her Masters. She has sent out many, many resumes for months. It is a very tough job market and not likely to improve any time soon.

I hope all of those young people who voted for Obama in 2008 learn an important lesson about the Dems and their Marxist agenda. So how’s that hope and change thing working out for you?

Here's the thing I don't get. 0bama literally promised them the moon in terms of "free" health care and other expansions of government "generosity." Why would they "need" jobs?

What I thought ~ Orzag, another incompetent Obama lackey, has no sense of history. Recent graduates are getting nothing at all out of the regime.

Hitler and his cronies took advantage of the post WWI system in Germany that left vast armies of youth unemployed.

This is not a smart move.

BTW, the Senate is working on extending unemployment benefits again. None of those benefits go to recent graduates ~ whether from highschool or college.

Maybe I should grow a moustache ~ hey, I already have one ~ should say "dye my moustache", get a nifty new brown uniform, and make myself very famous or something. The children await their leader (/s)

The man is reckless. Things are bad now, but actually slightly better than this time last year. My daughter graduated from NC State and had a job before she even graduated. She did well in her class standing, getting Magna cum Laude, but that means she had great grades, not top=notch. So people can get jobs, if they studied hard at something people in business actually want to use and are willing to pay for.

But then, getting real work is not something Obama has ever done, so how would he know anyway?

Hope & Change. They voted for this. Many baby boomers and seniors also voted for their death sentence.

Keep watching TV and paying for cable & sat tv folks. The 5 TV networks control 95% of the channels and they ALL support Obama including Fox/Saudia. Your cable bill keeps the propagandists alive.

Obama is worse than Carter by 4x. Carter did not bankrupt America. Obama will change America forever.

This is nothing new, I went through this as well. The days when you could flash a piece of paper (ie. degree) and get a six-figure job are long gone. There's a reason why getting your first engineering job is called 'breaking into the industry'. When you consider how much time and money is invested in getting a degree, learning that that degree doesn't really mean anything unless you have the experience to back it up, can be discouraging. Just sending out resumes with a degree reference and no practical experience will not cut it when there are 100 other people applying for that same job. The key is working on a list of contacts. Find out if you know people in the industry you want to work in. You need to find an 'in', some way to get your resume through the 'filter' and directly into the hands of an HR person. Knowing people and getting them to walk a resume into an HR office is a huge way to do that. It's no guarantee but it's a start.

Carter did not bankrupt America.

It wasn't from lack of trying.

I hate to say it, but a BS in Business nowadays wont get you much. She should concentrate on her Masters Degree hopefully in an area where the job market is better. I would suggest she look at market forecasts of where the jobs will be and focus her Masters Degree accordingly.

Orszag claims that it is important to improve the jobs market. So allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, doubling cap gains and divivend taxes, new hidden taxes in the medical industry takeover bill and seriously looking at implementing a vat tax is going to help?
Come Jan 1 2011, taxes are going to go through the roof and regardless who wins the congress, they kick in anyway. We have a goof in the white house who will never agree to lowering any taxes. So we are looking at a huge tax burden for at least for the next 3 years. The “we” I am talking about is individuals and businesses. This situation we are in is a downward spiral that has a lot of momentum. It will take very large changes in the government to even stop this crap much less reverse it. In 2007 we started hunkering down for what I thought would be a short term recession. Now I see that it will be a long term depression.
