MAY 20, 2010 Whitman's Lead Narrows in California Race

BY STU WOO

Meg Whitman appears to have lost much of her wide lead in the race to be the Republican contender in California's November gubernatorial election. Two months ago, Ms. Whitman looked to be cruising toward the Republican nomination. Polls showed the former eBay Inc. chief executive leading her main opponent, state insurance commissioner Steve Poizner, by 50 percentage points.

With three weeks to go before the June 8 primary, Mr. Poizner is pulling off an unexpected rally. A survey to be released Thursday shows Ms. Whitman's advantage dwindling to single digits, with 38% of respondents saying they would vote for her, ...

“With three weeks to go before the June 8 primary, Mr. Poizner is pulling off an unexpected rally. A survey to be released Thursday shows Ms. Whitman’s advantage dwindling to single digits, with 38% of respondents saying they would vote for her, and 29% for Mr. Poizner.

The widely trusted poll, by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, follows similar results in other recent surveys that suggest a sharply tightened race. A May 10 SurveyUSA poll showed Ms. Whitman leading Mr. Poizner 39% to 37%. Ms. Whitman launched an expensive advertising blitz last fall. Mr. Poizner made up ground in the past several weeks, some political analysts said, by starting his own ad campaign.

The negative mood of voters this year has helped the Poizner campaign, said Mark Baldassare, president of the Public Policy Institute of California. “No one who’s the front-runner can feel safe and secure in the lead, because voting attitudes are in flux this year, and with that comes a lack of strong allegiance to candidates,” he said.”

Dick Cheney has endorsed Whitman, so she gets my vote.

Other than not voting, or supporting and donating to Democrats, and hiring them, she someday will aspire to RINO.

She’s another spineless, doormat corporate, Mitt supported dolt.

Only the first 28 years. She has voted since 2002.

I will not vote for another corporate elitist endorsed by the GOP mandarins. Whitman promises things that will never happen, like controlling the borders, ending sanctuary cities, denying benefits to illegals, reigning in the public unions. Get real. Her attacks on Poizner are incessant and adolescent. She strikes me as a horrible person.

I’m still unsure. I thought I heard McClintock supporting Poizner. But then I heard the Howard Jarvis folks complaining about Poizner. Suppose I still have homework to do.

Just what I was thinking, AndyTB. One thing that has me leaning toward Whitman: The democrat party is running an ad against her already! This reminded me of something Rush said in reference to the pummeling that Palin gets, “they show you what they are afraid of”. The fact that the democrat party is spending money to keep Whitman out of the general election suggests to me that they see her as the bigger threat.

Dick Cheney and his family have come out as big gay agenda pushers now, gays in the military, gay marriage, the family has gone Romney.

Incredible. I will be sick if she gets elected. And you will be also after your euphoria wears off and you see the wreck she will bring upon California.

You trust Cheney over McClintock?

Whitman has a new ad running on TV that doesn’t attack Poizner snd I gotta say it is a positive piece after all the mud slinging she has heaped on us since last fall. I think it will improve her numbers before the primary...

All you have to do is notice that Poizner make little or no mention of his current job. CA department of insurance is mismanaged. I know this from personal recent experience with this agency. I tried to reach his office. He is not available to the public. He does not respond to email.

Even in the sample ballot Poizner lists his occupation as “Business Man” not insurance commissioner. You can find tons of stuff on youtube that take position from all side for Poizner. Do not believe what he is saying now. He is portraying himself as far more conservative than he truly is.

Andy, you are a liar and obviously a Whitman staffer. Steve Poizner cut his departments spending by 15%. Even the liberal Sacramento Bee that endorsed Meg Whitman called Whitman a “liar”, twice, concerning her attack on Poizners department. Poizner also cut fees two times on agents and brokers who fund his department. First time in history that this has occurred. I am a licensed insurance agent in California, and he has saved me 200 bucks with those cuts. So peddle your liberal Meg Whitmans lies somewhere else.

If you will call me a liar publicly, but not state what I supposedly lied about that is an attack on my character. That is without personal provocation, but obviously I hit a nerve. Prove it and site reference.

Specifically, what is the lie? I will argue with you point by point publicly every assertion I have made. Do you have the character to back your attack?

I will defer if you can prove it. I expect a public apology if you can’t
