The chaotic end to the Red Shirt campaign is certain to deal a heavy blow to the economy and tourism industry of Thailand, a key U.S. ally and long considered one of the more stable economies of Southeast Asia. I cannot begin to provide a full explanation, so take this is a simple introduction.
There is no doubt there is corruption in Thai government, it has been so since Marshal Sarit Thanarat (whom I’ve met). But, for the most part, the Thai People enjoy a level of freedom American’s can only dream about.
There has always been a leftist (communist) movement in Thailand, which was kept in check by very austere measures. (In the 60’s, communists were shot on sight. I was there. I saw it. Ruthless, but it worked.)
Most of the “Red Shirts” are youths fed up with the corruption of the government, and have personal problems with that government, which have been bilked by the leaders of the movement, which are essentially leftists looking for power. They put the whole movement over in the name of “democracy,” which is how all leftist movements are put over.
I’m sure this movement will be put down (Thailand still simply executes terrorists—which these violent thugs are).
Hope this is at least some answer to the question that, I agree, never seems to get answered.
