Bill Maher's bigotry insults common sense, MLK, my mom
Kansas City Star ^ | May 18, 2010 | JASON WHITLOCK

My fear is that Bill Maher’s religious-like crusade to wipe out religion is going to wipe out the Bill Maher I’ve grown to enjoy and respect.

His seething intolerance and disrespect for people with religious faith are becoming as offensive as the racial and sexual-orientation bigotry Maher delights in railing against.

Last Friday on his HBO program, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” he engaged his political panel in a 14-minute discussion that focused on his belief that religious people are “deluded.” His panelists, including an author who is an atheist, disagreed with Maher, which served to frustrate him.

Maher’s flippant, dismissive and condescending attitude frustrated me, one of his biggest fans. I know the benefits of faith in a higher power. That Maher does not saddens me. But it does not make me think he’s delusional.

I have friends who think he is great.

One common trait among them is their disdain for conservatives who they view as “judgemental” and “holier than thou”

They are Sarah Palin haters as well.

That’s the frustrating part!

While they are railing against conservatives and calling them every name in the book - it’s very difficult holding my tongue from saying “who is judging? who is intolerant and closed minded?”

If Bill Maher had even the most basic training in philosophy or science he would know that:

1. No one has come up with a non-controversial set of foundational concepts or principles upon which all knowledge can be based. There are people who have convinced themselves one way or the other, but no one has come up with a set that is generally acceptable to all reasonably intelligent people of good will.

2. Without foundational principles we are limited to what we can glean empirically and derive logically from those empirical observations.

3. Empirical knowledge is limited. Unless we have examined all points of space-time with infinite precision then we can never be completely certain about any theories or conclusions based on what limited empirical knowledge we have. Empirical knowledge is inductive knowledge and can only give us a good idea of what is probably true, but never certainty about what is true.

4. Anyone who claims that all religious people are delusional based solely on empirical knowledge is making an unsupportable claim ... or he himself is delusional.

it’s very frustrating dealing with it.

It doesn’t matter what facts are given - what is proven or disproven - they just can’t be reasoned with.

They “know” things and that’s all there is to it.

I think people like Maher and Hitchens are trying to convince themselves, as much as anyone else.

I think when we take back control of everything, we need to make them realize that they never even really knew what hatred was.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that naturewill reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”- Galatians 6:7-8

"'"I’ve seen his movie “Religulous,” which pointed out much of the absurdity, hypocrisy and violent danger found in organized religion across the globe.

I enjoyed the movie. I appreciated the point he was trying to make: Religious extremists and people who see faith as an appropriate substitute for thought are likely to set off a global nuclear holocaust."'"

Yeah, Jews and Christians are just champing at the bit to launch a nuclear holocaust. When you just lump “the religious” all together as this article does you are abdicating your responsibility to use your (God-given) brains and thus you assist Evil..

Does this left wing lunatic Maher realize how totally insignificant and impotent he is in changing even a single mind regarding religious belief?

That’s the thing - I have no desire or even the energy to do that.
I have more important things to do.

And I think that is one big difference between libs and conservatives.

Not difficult for me, when they talk like fools I let them know they are fools. Try it, you’ll be amazed how much better you feel.

I’ve done it many times in the past.

It doesn’t do a damn thing.

They’re just as stupid afterwards as they were before.
