I guess that explains it. Networking doesn’t mean as much in my line of business as it does in others. You can’t fake your way through engineering design as well as you can in other fields — especially politics, law, etc.

Sure you can if you have buddies.
Your boss can lie on you eval. Give you credit for someone else’s work. Move you to ‘management’ where you don't have to do anything technical.

They got it all worked out. But, yes you would find them more in business where their output is less specifically defined.

Bob, I need you to write a company ethics statement.
Bill, I'll get right on that.

Then Bill get recruited to another company with a big promotion and a big raise based on Bob's recommendation.
Then Bill hires Bob with a promotion and raise.

Then Bob based on Bill's rave reviews goes to another company and hires Bill and on and on. That's how it works.

These are two guys. Now imagine you have a network of thousands to call on. The reason these guys like each other is because they all know the rules. That's what they were taught, the rules.

They all know that they are not geniuses, but they stick together, keep their mouth shut, keep quiet about everything no matter how corrupt, and follow the rules. That is part of the reason there is so much corruption in coporate and wall street firms.
