That's what struck me when I considered buying gold. It dawned on me that the party selling the gold obviously thinks the paper I'd be giving him was worth something. How does the gold seller preserve the value of the cash I'm giving him? Buy gold with it? I'm probably just dumb, but I could never answer my own question, so I still haven't bought any gold. I also noticed that fellow Paulson that made the killing in the Goldman Sachs deal with the shorts is now in gold. Just seemed to me the golden fleece was just a fleece.
