At a ceremony honoring veterans and senior citizens who sent presents to soldiers overseas, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut rose and spoke of an earlier time in his life.
We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam, Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it Afghanistan or Iraq we owe our military men and women unconditional support.
There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.
The deferments allowed Mr. Blumenthal to complete his studies at Harvard; pursue a graduate fellowship in England; serve as a special assistant to The Washington Posts publisher, Katharine Graham; and ultimately take a job in the Nixon White House.
In 1970, with his last deferment in jeopardy, he landed a coveted spot in the Marine Reserve, which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam. He joined a unit in Washington that conducted drills and other exercises and focused on local projects, like fixing a campground and organizing a Toys for Tots drive.
Many politicians have faced questions over their decisions during the Vietnam War, and Mr. Blumenthal, who is seeking the seat being vacated by Senator Christopher J. Dodd, is not alone in staying out of the war.
But what is striking about Mr. Blumenthals record is the contrast between the many steps he took that allowed him to avoid Vietnam, and the misleading way he often speaks about that period of his life now...

“Candidate’s”? It must feel sickening for the NYT to add “democrat” on the title..
This is the ninth thread on the current front page about this.
Wondering how soon the tenth will be posted.
Each article has new and different information. This NY Times piece is the most comprehensive of those posted. I think the most damning too, surprisingly, coming from the Slimes.
Correction!:
“Leftist,Communist, Hate AMERICA, Muslim Radical Terrorist Supporter to the Senate anyway!”
Heck, for a liberal Dem, lying is a resume enhancer ... his polling probably shot up 10-15% since this story broke ....
Not having the luxury of sitting in front of screen all day, I’m glad I caught it on the 9th go-round
Jean Kerry wannabe.
HEY...I noted several articles were already posted clown, and went down the front page and counted them. It took me only a few seconds to do so as they are all right there, so shove it.
Blumenthal is a white guy ... he's fair game for the NY Times even though he's a 'rat. It's interesting that when it comes to Obama there is absolutely no curiosity whatsoever ...
He says he doesn’t remember how many deferments (5) he received.
No one was that stoned back then. Even people who spent hours thinking they were butterflies or trees sending out roots knew if they were going to Nam or had a deferment and how many they had gotten.
Bandwidth is cheap ... but words, thoughts, and opinions can be very rich .. and isn't that why we're here?
If a similar story has been posted way too many times for the Mods to stomach, then they'll sort it out on their terms ... otherwise, enjoy the banter as it comes, and don't ever feel intimidated by the self-proclaimed FR Posting Police
Nuff Said,

On a less serious matter, another flattering but untrue description of Mr. Blumenthals history has appeared in profiles about him. In two largely favorable profiles, the Slate article and a magazine article in The Hartford Courant in 2004 with which he cooperated, Mr. Blumenthal is described prominently as having served as captain of the swim team at Harvard. Records at the college show that he was never on the team.
I wonder what else might be discovered?
We may have just taken back the Senate.
So what? He survived boot camp like thousands of others. Semper Fidelis doesn’t include lies.
landed a coveted spot in the Marine Reserve, which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam. He joined a unit in Washington that conducted drills and other exercises and focused on local projects,
Don’t for a second think he got there all by himself,
somebody with pull smoothed the way.
This is the kind of brazen Democrat lying that can't be bumped enough.
I hope there ends up being 20 threads.
BUMP!
