CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. A school district that gained the support of President Obama for promoting accountability after it fired all its teachers from a struggling school announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the union to return all the current employees to their jobs.
The two sides said a transformation plan for Central Falls High School for the coming school year would allow the 87 teachers, guidance counselors, librarians, and other workers who were to lose their jobs at the end of this year to return without having to reapply. More than 700 people had already applied for the positions.
The agreement also requires a longer school day, more after-school tutoring, and other changes.

Ok, so I’m missing something .... this has changed what exactly?
But no more money.
This may be a blessing in disguise.
I'm quasi-retired (still looking for work at 62 but signed up for early SS .. it will gone for even ME soon enough, I think) ... and I can attest to the weirdness of having a daily routine of decades become suddenly altered.
For me it was from VERY active to .. not so much.
If the teachers really DO have longer days and more work load, perhaps the older ones will fold, the younger ones will grit their teeth, harden their necks and become even MORE innefectual, thus causing a more grievous situation that what existed before.
Union folds? Looks to me like the school folded and the union won.
But you know, it is immeasurable what one can withhold.
Right, no real progress. Should have hired the scabs.
Hacks keep jobs.
Yeah, I was thinking that if the same ineffective people are doing the same thing .... longer, you end up with less overall enthusiasm.
Who gave the union ANY AUTHORITY? Get the best teachers for the job.
Nothing.
Obama BS.
To me, sounds like the teacher's union won!
I would have replaced them all after written tests. None had to earn their position.
