BP PLC successfully inserted a tube into the broken pipe leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday and siphoned off some of the spilling oil to a vessel on the water's surface, increasing the chances that the company will be able to siphon off much of the oil now gushing into the sea.
The crude oil will be collected on a drill ship. Natural gas that accompanies it is to be flared, or burned off.

OMG! The left will have fits over this!
They need the Oilmageddon to destroy the beaches and the economy of the South!
They have been almost salivating over it.
its a straw inside another straw why could this not have an inflatable rubber seal on the outside of it? Do I have to design every strategy for BP?
Well,...you need to call them for a consulting contract...
Put the seal on the inside of the riser...It’s called a “packer”, and they’ve been in use in the industry for roughly 90 years.

The oil spill is having only minimal environmental effects on land, but it may be causing far more serious problems in the water, scientists said Sunday.

OBAMA ADMIN GAVE RIG 'SAFETY AWARD' LAST YEAR
It is indeed a catastrophe. For several weeks now, the State-Run Media has been able to find but a handful of oily birds to put on TV, despite 24/7 airplane and boat searches.
By now, there were supposed to have been many thousands. Plus blackened beaches at Gulf Shores and Perdido Key.
Don’t worry-—the SUE BP FR crowd will soon be on
Sadly, many FReepers have joined the leftist, litigious masses---just drooling to bankrupt BP, and it's partners over the ecological nightmare of the millennium.
Despite plan, not a single fire boom on hand on Gulf Coast at time of oil spill
The graphic shown in another thread does indicate a pair of collars to center the suction line in the leaking pipe. It's not clear if those actually help seal the gap or just locate the smaller line at the center (possibly to allow a more secure packing to be fitted as the next step).
You nailed it. It's disturbing to hear the FR Monday Quarterbacks, those claiming to know, those with 20/20 hindsight and especially those who've never been close to a drilling well, testing a well, etc. Those of us in the industry know full well the inherent danger with very heavy metal, high speed metal and moving parts, dangerous chemicals and potential ultra high pressure, volatile gas, casinghead gas, oil, etc.
I lost a brother-in-law years ago when the BOP crushed him on a well in NM. Knew some people on a crew in WY that had 4 killed from an H2S leak. We mourn the loss of life and try our best to fix the mistakes, but there ain't no getting around the danger. Anybody claiming a first class operating company does things on the cheap, knows not what they are talking about.
Thank you, Obama, for saving us from utter destruction.
I think it will be some time days,...to see whether they can really get it going....based on the article.

I agree. I do not know the industry but its overall safety record seems excellent. The safety record must be judged in the light of the dangerous conditions. I am grateful for the dedication and innovation of individuals who bring a vital product to market under dangerous conditions with incredible levels of regulations and taxation.
Thanks a million for the industry vote of confidence. You described our regulatory/taxation atmosphere most accurately. Shoot me your freepmail and I’ll send you a proprietary industry treatise on the Kerry/Lieberman proposed evisceration of the energy industry.
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for the report.
