Scientists forecast decades of ash clouds

Many more of Iceland’s volcanoes seem to be stirring

Iceland could be at the start of a surge in volcanic activity that may produce more eruptions Jonathan Leake and Chris Hastings

THE Icelandic eruption that has caused misery for air travellers could be part of a surge in volcanic activity that will affect the whole of Europe for decades, scientists have warned.

They have reconstructed a timeline of 205 eruptions in Iceland, spanning the past 1,100 years, and found that they occur in regular cycles — with the relatively quiet phase that dominated the past five decades now coming to an end.

At least three other big Icelandic volcanoes are building towards an eruption, according to Thor Thordarson, a volcanologist at Edinburgh University.

“The frequency of Icelandic eruptions seems to rise and fall in a cycle lasting around 140 years,” he said. “In the latter part of the 20th century we were in a low period, but now there is evidence that we could be approaching a peak.”

Economic crisis would bankrupt most of Euro countries and also be subject to decades of continuing volcanic eruption.

Hmmm...Europe may not be able to feed itself, at least not with its present population level.

Perhaps there will be an exodus back to the Middle East and Africa - one can only hope!

In otherwords, they found another sucker to sell the "hockey stick" software too.

Funny how “decades of ash clouds” will have NO effect at on global warming.

The very least it should help keep the poor polar bears cool!

Scientists forecast decades of ash clouds .. Many more of Iceland’s volcanoes seem to be stirring ...

Well then. The *logical* solution is to nuke that little nothing nation into smithereens until nothing is left above sea level.

That'll teach them for polluting the air with their ash.

Iceland exists along the rift between two tectonic plates that are continuously being pulled apart. As the scab covering the parting line thins, the pressure allows venting through the opening.

The so called cyclic events are actually the scab formation or magma clotting along the line of the opening. The whole line is moving and the parting line will be penetrated whenever it thins below the thickness required to hold the pressure.

We lack the ability to measure the scab thickness and thus make some estimate of the probability of a breakthrough somewhere else along the line. We can only watch.

Every time I hear the word “scientist” my filter comes up and sifts what they say. Too many of today’s “scientists” are politicians in disguise.

Iceland president tells Europe to get ready for Katla

(Short Video) - The eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano, and the travel chaos it has caused, is only a “small rehearsal,” according to Iceland’s President Olafur Grimsson.
“The larger Katla volcano, right next to it, usually erupts every century, and the last eruption was in 1918. The time for Katla to erupt is coming close.”
“I don’t say if, but I say when Katla will erupt,” Grimsson says. “We have been waiting for that eruption for several years.”
“It can create, for a long period, extraordinary damage to modern advanced society.”
