The Russians spoofed the approach radar and caused the plane (flying IFR) to hit the ground, thinking it was near the runway.
It’s very easy to do.

Yes like in Die Hard 2 just make the ILS altitude seem Higher then it is.. Plane comes in to fast and hits... Thats all she wrote.

The airport had no ILS. It’s a VFR only air port. The russians told’em not to land because of the bad weather. So not the ruskies fault.
