Former first lady Laura Bush has broken with her husband on the premier social issues of his administration and said she backs gay marriage and abortion.
After more than eight years of silence on the controversial issues, Mrs. Bush said in an interview with CNN's Larry KingTuesday, that gay marriage and abortion were points of contention with her husband, former President George W. Bush.
Mrs. Bush in recent weeks has been promoting her memoir "Spoken from the Heart," in which she writes about her life both before and after becoming first lady.
In response to a question about gay marriage, she said, "There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman. But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."
Mrs. Bush said she and the ex-president "disagree" on legalizing same-sex marriage.

My young voting record was for Bush and Mcstain. South park had it right with the two choices.
Old Lady Barbara is the same way: cold eyed baby killers , the two of them.
Wow, like do you think that there might be many young women that may be on the fence about the decision to abort their baby and like wow, now hear Laura Bush’s position on this and be more convinced that it’s ok.
Wow...where are your reasoning skills. Wow like wow
I agree, FRiend. As someone who has always greatly admired Laura Bush, I find her newly-revealed views extremely disappointing...
We only thought she was a conservative because of her style, her class, appearance, the way she spoke, etc. She was a perfect first lady. If someone asked her about these issues and she hide them then and came out with it now - I’d consider her a fake and a liar.
She’s not a fake because of our assumptions. I know, in the past, I made assumptions about other peoples values were like mine because we were alot alike. And I was proven wrong and it really bothered me that I gave them too much credit and fooled myself.
Seriously, this is breaking news? Who cares?
I can like people but disagree with them on issues.
Maybe some other Freepers don’t have that ability.
Laura Bush Foundation Announces $1,071,000 in Grants To Gulf Coast School Libraries.
It list all libraries. That’s her passion.
I new it before Dubya was elected the first time. No one wanted to hear it:
From October 21, 2006
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was “showing due deference” when she recognized as “mother-in-law” the mother of one of two “gay” partners at a recent Washington ceremony.
It happened recently when Rice and first lady Laura Bush spoke for the administration at an Oct. 10 swearing-in at the State Department for Mark Dybul. He was accompanied by his male partner, Jason Claire. (snip)

You’re my hero! ;)
Do you feel like you’re the more reasoned of us with that response?
No one under 50 cares what Laura Bush thinks about abortion, and they aren’t the likely candidates for one anyway.
Teaching at home that life begins at conception is the only thing that keeps young women from aborting babies.
I agree in a way but how wonderful if she came out for adoption. She is ‘so into children’ with his passion for school libraries, one would think that would be a natural choice.
Too bad. Nice set of cans though.
Many Methodist denominations act like the Unitarians, Laura went Rogue the other way. Too bad, explains why Bush didn’t have the stomach for political fights with the left.
This is what Rush talks about as well with his golfing buddies. Their wives argue against what is right to be popular with the media and their left wing women friends.
Maybe she will have a change of heart in that direction.
Since they rarely referred to him as President when he was, it is odd they now admit he was one.
Former vs. Ex -- something like the former Marine and Ex-Marine I wonder.
Yep! It’s sad.
People who seem to have it all, don’t always.
