Maybe they studied how well alcohol restriction is working for the aborigines in Australia.

For progressives, empirical data are unimportant. What really matters is their ideology. They know that if they just set up their utopia correctly, the people will fall in line.

It actually worked pretty well.
Comparing alcohol comsumption before and after Prohibition shows that it dropped dramatically. People used to consume alcohol in quantities that would be staggering today.
Strangely enough, consumption actually went up during some parts of prohibition, though.
