More than 1,500 pounds of marijuana were discovered in a pickup by U.S. Border Patrol agents northwest of Bisbee, authorities said Tuesday.
From October 2009 through April 2010, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents have seized approximately 552,000 pounds of marijuana, estimated to be worth $441 million.

Pinging Cheech and Chong.
Someone help me out here: 1500 pounds is what, 30 bales? Let’s say you compress it to 15 bales somehow. You’re gonna put it in a pickup truck?
These were just people going out for ice cream!!!!!
A total of 47 bundles were found inside the vehicle, which was immobilized by the driver before he or she fled the area, the Border Patrol said.
We have hauled a ton of hay in our pickup. Not sure why you are questioning this? You would be surprised at some of the loads- when they really load one up it is often the weighted down appearance of the vehicle that gets the attention of Border Patrol or LEO to begin with. Most smugglers load around 500-800 pounds for that reason, not because they couldn’t haul more.
Yes, but did they employ racial profiling?/extreme sarc.
I was simply wondering how a pickup truck loaded in such a fashion makes it through Customs. (Unless it didn’t).
I think, with that amount of pot, they would have needed one of those little green pine tree air fresheners to make sure they were able to slip past the crack US customs.
It didn’t. They use illegal aliens to carry it over the border, then load it up on trucks stolen in the Phoenix or Tucson area.
These heavy vehicles either cross illegally in the boonies loaded or sometimes the dope is hauled across by people with backpacks or even packed across with horses or burros- then picked up with a vehicle on this side.
Many loads are caught by CBP at the border crossings, but you are right this amount couldn’t really be concealed. Usually loads caught at crossings are 400 pounds or less. Whatever fits in gas tank or false bed.
Funny though several years ago a guy tried to cross at a port with several hundred pounds packed in trash bags just sitting in the bed of his truck- he must have thought smuggling was really easy. Some have constructed vehicle seats out of dope, it is amazing what you can do if you have an upholstery man to help. Usually for port crossings false compartments and natural crevices and gas tank is used, so amount is less due to space.
The yellow vanilla ones are better. The pine ones make your car smell like a restroom.
Here in Texas, the drug runners steal 3/4 and 1 ton trucks because of their carrying capacity and their beefed up suspensions. This allows them to carry more pot and drive across fields without tearing up the undercarriage. Buddy of mine in Houston had a nice 1 ton 4X4 crew cab diesel. Stolen out of a resturant parking lot while he was eating dinner. Truck was found outside of McAllen Texas with a couple of flats. Guess they blew the tires out and abandonded the truck.
Man, if that puts a big dent in the supply of “medical” marijuana in Colorado, there could soon be millions of 18-year old chemotherapy patients here in serious pain!
Those are their favorites here, too. I worry about my F-250, so I don’t park it anywhere but on Fort Huachuca or behind locked gates on my property.
Ping!
