GOP moderation hobbles Portman's Ohio run (Palin endorsement)
The Washington Times ^ | May 12, 2010 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Posted on 05/11/2010 10:25:12 PM PDT by FTJM

Despite a favorable electoral climate for Republicans and former Rep. Rob Portman's huge funding advantage over his Democratic opponent in the contest for Ohio's U.S. Senate seat, polls show the race in a dead heat.

Conservatives and "tea party" activists say Mr. Portman's record as a moderate Republican has failed to fire up not only core GOP voters but also what may prove just as important to victory - the "tea party" movement. Complicating the picture is the failure of that movement to meet expectations in some of the May 4 Ohio GOP primary elections.

Mr. Portman's resume, though extensive, has elements that raise red flags for conservatives - his service in the White House of President George H.W. Bush, who raised taxes and enlarged government; his election to six terms in the U.S. House, where he voted for the kind of spending that tea party supporters oppose; and his service as U.S. trade representative and then budget director in the big-spending George W. Bush administration.

"The tea party sees Portman as the establishment's guy, so the GOP establishment now is saying, 'Don't dismiss him just because he's a party guy,' " Ralph King, a coordinator for the Ohio Tea Party Patriots, told The Washington Times. "But that's asking us to look past his record - giving money to the United Nations and opposing [Colorado Republican] Tom Tancredo's try for a border measure in Congress."

The time to fight it out is in the primaries

The time to fight what out? Does the truth cease to matter once the primary has passed?

I saw someone on another thread this week saying they would rather vote for Tom Campbell the liberal over an unknown like Carly (who IMHO is probably the only one who could beat Boxer)... and someone else saying they prefer Jerry Brown over Whitman (and i'm not a fan of Whitman, but please... I remember the Governor called Jerry Brown -- actually both of them, his father was Governor when I moved to Sacramento as a child with my grandparents)... I just posted on another thread, people want to see what can be accomplished when you elect Republicans across the board -- look at Arizona... those same bills were going to Nappy and were regularly vetoed, Jan is signing them.... you can't fix what is broke if you keep electing democrats so that they are in charge, we need the numbers in DC to get rid of Pelosi and Reid, and some in that number are going to be imperfect.... and to get rid of them we need good candidates with a spine willing to challenge them in primaries..

I see there is speculation Jason Chavetez will challenge Hatch in 2012, that is great news, IMHO... both AZ and Utah are doing house cleaning, we need a lot more of that around the country, but we cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater or allow ourselves to be taken in by DNC trolls purposely baiting the waters here.

The “tea party” is not a tea party in the formal sense and it is made up of Republicans, Democrats and Independents.... we are not a third party nation, every election with third party candidates has pretty much favored the dems, certainly not conservatism.. the tea party has a roll to play in primaries, but we are talking general election here and a Republican vs a liberal democrat... I’ll go with the Republican every time.

I saw that post about voting for Campbell too! I was amazed.

CA is a mess and other than you and scant few others, people from out of state really don’t realize that all we can regularly accomplish is to elect conservative Republicans in congressional districts, but not statewide, which is not to say we will ever stop trying.

The last US Senator CA elected was pro-abortion Pete Wilson in ‘82 and again in ‘88. The democrats have held both seats ever since.

Orin Hatch needs to go. ALL fossil incumbents need to reite gracefully or be retired.

That's your right. You don't see anyone going ballistic because you said so.

and I voted for Pete Wilson both times. You are absolutely correct, though, CA will never elect a hard core conservative in a state-wide election, look where McClintock had to go just to (barely) win a congressional seat.

“His last ACU rating was 88%, the same as Kay Bailey Hutchison.”

Actually, I think his last rating was 90 and his lifetime was 88.

But you, in all of your childishness was pick the 9 rating of the Libtard Democrat.

You’re assuming they have brains when evidence is to the contrary.

Nah, Larry Sinclair has him on lockdown.

But RonPaul is looking for interns if you’re interested. You just need to paint some signs with 911 Inside Job.

...and you’re in.

The ACU has not rated him since 2004.

The last rating he got from FAIR was zero. He's a dream candidate for the "path to citizenship" and open border's RINOs.

FAIR
