If Not at Yucca, Then Where?
POWERnews ^ | May 1, 2010 | James M. Hylko and Dr. Robert Peltier

Since 1983, consumers of electricity from nuclear power plants have paid approximately $32 billion into the federal Nuclear Waste Fund (NWF). Consumers in Alabama and Georgia, for example, have sent more than $1 billion to the NWF and continue to contribute over $44 million a year. The current balance in the NWF exceeds approximately $22 billion, and consumers nationwide are contributing about an additional $750 million a year. The difference between total collections and the current balance is roughly equal to the approximately $9 billion already spent on preparing the Yucca Mountain site to date.

The key unanswered question: Is the federal government responsible to reimburse ratepayers for the cancellation of Yucca Mountain? The U.S. Senate Committee on Environmental and Public Works weighed in on this issue in 2008 and prepared an estimate of the potentially huge long-term liabilities. The committee estimated additional liabilities of $7 billion by 2017 and $11 billion by 2020 should Yucca Mountain be cancelled

If the desolate Yucca Mountain location (on federal land) is unacceptable, can there possibly be another politically acceptable location for such a repository in the lower 48 states.

Use a magnetic rail gun to fire rods of radioactive material towards the sun.

Nuclear "waste" should not be buried in a repository
when it can be reprocessed and recycled as fuel.

How did the French solve this problem? I mean, they DO have a long term successful nuclear power industry.

I guess more to the point is that the waste is being stored at every nuclear plant in the country, and that seems to be just fine with the Democrats.

The money mentioned above has got to be paid back to the utilities so not only will we have the waste on each site but we (the tax payer) will be on the hook for the money already collected and wasted by the Federal government.

It a microcosm of what has been going on with the Federal government with everything they touch, Highways, SS, medicare, water, you name it. All of the money has been pissed away with little or nothing to show for it.

The original intent was to separate the fission fractions and vitrify them. Jimmah Carter nixed the reprocessing of spent civilian fuel.

prepared an estimate of the potentially huge long-term liabilities.

I just caught this. Are they saying they SPENT that money that they collected for a specific purpose on something besides that specific purpose?

If a trustee did something like that, he'd be in jail. When it's the government, it suddenly becomes 'a liability'. Rat bastards.

Isn’t there a class of reactors that can generate fuel with this material?

“...possbly be another politically acceptable location for such a repository ....” Well there is a swamp on the East Coast that comes to mind.

Actually, I read something recently about recycling “waste” I think in some Scandinavian country. But, maybe the French. Seems as though they were doing pretty good at it.

A breeder reactor. That is what the French use but it could be done in other ways.

Vote Tarkanian.
Look at his ideas.
Yucca = depository + recycling facility,
Make UNLV leading nuclear research facility in the world.

He was the first candidate to take on a seemingly unpopular item and bring smart conservatism back to the table.

Keep it in San Francisco and other liberal cities. They need an incentive to support Yucca Mt.
