God smote Sodom and Gomorrah for their deviancy. Even had the citizens supported low taxes and limited government, it's doubtful that He would have mitigated His Divine Judgment.
That’s probably true, but he would have smote a much more financial-solvent body politic.
And that would have been something to their credit.
In all seriousness, there is a moral element to a body politic that is financially solvent.
If you have a group of people who manifest the attitude, through their elected officials, that they can just borrow and borrow and never repay, that does in fact does say something about the moral underpinning of that group of people. It says something about their relationship with reality.
