Tea Party members rally in downtown Morgan Hill
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 5/08/2010 | Karen de Sá

A larger-than-usual group of conservatives waived flags and proclaimed their patriotism Saturday in Morgan Hill, a public display of support for the Tea Party and four local high school students, admonished last Wednesday by a school administrator for wearing American flag-attire on Cinco de Mayo.

The local Tea Party contingent gathers at the downtown street corner each weekend. But on Saturday, fueled by national media coverage of the incident at Live Oak High School, dozens of additional protesters appeared dressed in red, white and blueto express anger over the boys' treatment. School administrators feared the students wearing the American flag shirts were provoking students celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Supporters and detractors have come out on both sides of the controversy.

But the mid-town gathering included a broader message, with protesters lamenting what they described as the country's shift toward communism, and waving signs proclaiming: "Our current government is what our founding fathers tried to prevent," and "I'm sorry if this flag offends you — Not really!"

"We're just out here supporting our country — we're just Tea Partiers and conservatives and we believe our rights our being stripped away," said one of the event's organizers, Georgine Scott-Codiga. An employee of the Monterey County Sheriff's Department, Scott-Codiga said Saturday's crowd was about four times larger than recent gatherings, evidence of support for the high-schoolers' right to wear patriotic attire whenever they please.

The boys were asked by the assistant principal to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out or go home for the day, out of respect for students celebrating their Mexican heritage.

The suspect later told police he felt disrespected by the sign.

"A larger-than-usual group of conservatives waived flags ..."

WAIVED? I don't think any of those patriots were WAIVING flags. Indeed, just the opposite. Waving them, maybe, but not WAIVING them.

“There was one arrest, however. A 20-year-old Latino was taken to jail and charged with misdemeanor battery for swatting a Tea Party member’s sign out of his hand. The suspect later told police he felt disrespected by the sign.”

He is going to find out what real disrespect is if he keeps those antics up.

It is hard to believe that the American flag offends anyone by being flown in America. That is insane. No one tried to stop the Hispanics from celebrating their holiday.

That they are arrogant enough and stupid enough to be angry because those kids displayed the American flag says one thing to me. They should not be permitted to celebrate Cinco de Mayo again.

These bast*#^s have no idea about freedom in America. They don’t have it in the corrupt sewers they come from. Yet they resent our flag. Well I resent them and they should be kicked out of this country. Enough is enough. If you don’t like our flag get the he^l out and don’t come back.

Just snickering—most journos look down their nose at Tea Partiers, often calling them (among other things) ignorant. Yet this one doesn’t know the difference between waive and wave. And the difference really is significant—one might almost suspect a freudian slip.

Self appointed spelling Police?

Nope. I appointed her.

(Not really.)

But a misspelling can be downright serious. Many years ago (ca. 1983, back when most folks knew how to spell correctly), a prior employer published an ad about how their product would help you find a certain kind of illusive problem.

They meant "elusive," as in hard to find, instead of "illusive," it's not really there, but the spelling error completely inverted their pitch. Instead of "our equipment finds that hard-to-find problem," the ad really said "our equipment shows you problems that aren't really there."

Not what you want.

[They were touting a special super-high-speed electronic circuit I spent a LOT of time designing for them, much faster than competitor HP's and it used much less power and less circuit-board real-estate to boot. I left the company on good terms and so had no problem joking with my old boss about this spelling error.]

No, if they waived the flag, they’d go without flags. Look it up.

See if you can find the spelling error in THAT sentence.

The article stated 150 attended, that’s not too bad for such a short announcement.

I think it was a caller to Rush the other day who illustrated the idiocy most clearly; Can you imagine going to Mexico on the Fourth of July and getting incensed at someone for displaying the Mexican flag? Of course not. It’s absurd, and obscene, and the fact that it gets any traction in this country is truly frightening.
