A third-grader at Brazos Elementary was given a weeks detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher.
School officials in western Fort Bend County are defending the seemingly harsh sentence. The schools principal and superintendent said they were simply complying with a state law that limits junk food in schools.
But the girls parents say its a huge overreaction. I think its stupid to give a kid a weeks worth of detention for a piece of candy, said Amber Brazda, the girls mother. "The whole thing was just ridiculous to me."
Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice.
According to the disciplinary referral, she would be separated from other students during lunch and recess through Friday.
Jack Ellis, the superintendent for Brazos Independent School District, declined an on-camera interview. But he said the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned minimal nutrition foods.
Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules, he said.
The state, however, gives each school discretion over how to enforce the policy. Ellis said school officials had decided a stricter punishment was necessary after lesser penalties failed to serve as a deterrent.
Ellis said failing to adhere to the states guidelines could put federal funding in jeopardy.
According to the Texas Department of Agricultures website, The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy (TPSNP) explicitly states that it does not restrict what foods or beverages parents may provide for their own children's consumption.

Sending your child to government schools is almost tantamount to abuse.
The Jolly Rancher is probably more nutritionally sound than some of the items on the school’s lunch menu.
School cafeterias - serving up the stuff the prisons wouldn’t buy...
A friend in school give the girl a small piece of candy - for which the school uses Draconian, totally out of proportion punishment - (taking the candy and giving the child a warning - or at MOST, kept in for ONE recess...but this cr*p goes on the child's record and follows her for the rest of her school days. Just a bit disproportionate?
and YOUR reaction? the mother's “ a PIG” and and and
Wonder who's worse, her or someone so knee-jerk judgmental.
Get a life.
isn’t that the truth. i was a teacher. talk about money toilets.
Here ya go again - if you aren’t a Flaming liberal - or a tight as... holier than thou that perceives themselves “Christian” - you’ve missed your calling
the thread is about a run-a-muck school system - not a totally unfounded attack on the parents.
bingo ;o)
It wasn’t a bad idea and wasn’t terrible when the program started but head start is like every other federally funded social program that has existed for far too long. They became all about protecting their turf and collecting ever larger pieces of the taxpayer pie.
All these posts and no one has yet suggested you call these a**holes and get someone fired!
Make an example outta someone... its fun :)

Amen to that...
I think we may be past the point where the parent's name means much as far as their marital status.
I don't share my husband's last name professionally, though our children (all born inside of wedlock) do.
I adore and am proud of being my husband's wife, and that's how I'd introduce myself to you if we met socially, but my driver's license/passport/etc. say different. I sign my maiden name when I sign anything other than personal correspondence.
This came up in conversation a few weeks back when a friend's daughter got married and changed her name. Her mom (my friend) was a little upset to see her daughter abandon her maiden name. Young women in their 20's seem to be going to the trouble of changing their maiden names professionally at least in part because they see it as a rejection of the monster feminism has become. Back when we got married, it wasn't so much feminism as a matter of practicality.
This is one of those ever-increasing cases where I'd like to ask all the gung-ho drug warriors if it still seems worth it to them.
As someone who doesn't and has never done drugs, I have watched with horrified amazement as my fellow "Conservatives" have begged the government at all levels to go to any lengths to keep people from harming themselves. "Horrified" because anyone with half a brain could see this coming.
The "amazement" part comes into play now, when all of those same people complain loudly about how their rights are being violated. I am entirely amazed that anyone can pretend to be shocked or surprised that the government isn't going to stop now that they've decided that they like all the power that goes with controlling people's lives.
The ironic thing is that illegal drugs, being illegal, are nearly impossible to regulate. So while everyone is eating flavor-free, fat-free, sugar-free low-sodium cardboard, the drug addicts will still have their drugs.
Around here, a lot of school administrators are TEAMSTERS.
There’s no surprise when they start acting like thugs.
oh please......not taking your husband’s name is a FEMINIST thingy.......your husband must be so proud. There is NO reason NOT to take your husband’s name.....NONE except FEMINISM.....or is last name is HITLER!
WHY do you want your kids to have a DIFFERENT NAME than YOURS......COOL???
Did you SEE the mom?? she was a PIG!
Once more, people:
Government is not reason. It is not eloquence. Government is force; like fire it is a dangerous servant -- and a fearful master.DON'T LEGISLATE "GOOD IDEAS"!!!
George Washington, 1797
Legislate ONLY those behaviors which should be universally punished, or universally demanded.
Is your husband jocon306?
I saw the mom. It’s wrong— juvenile, actually— to call her a pig.
