The article states

“Immigration lawyers and Department of Homeland Security officials say that many thousands of people in the military have spouses or close relatives who are illegal immigrants. Many of those service members have fought to gain legal status for their family members — only to hit a legal dead end created in 1996, when Congress last made major revisions to the immigration laws.”

DUH

why did they not do this the right way ???

Same reason most illegals don’t attempt to do it the right way- they took the easy way expecting us to do another amnesty- and another. Seriously I have had people tell me their relatives “went ahead and came up here for amnesty” all it takes to get a flood of illegals crossing is for the President or a congressman to mention amnesty.
