Many of those service members have fought to gain legal status for their family members — only to hit a legal dead end created in 1996, when Congress last made major revisions to the immigration laws.”

why did they not do this the right way ???
Same reason most illegals don’t attempt to do it the right way- they took the easy way expecting us to do another amnesty- and another. Seriously I have had people tell me their relatives “went ahead and came up here for amnesty” all it takes to get a flood of illegals crossing is for the President or a congressman to mention amnesty.
